  • I recommend https://colinwoodard.com/books/american-nations/ It's a well written source on this subject. Woodard details eleven groups each with a shared cultural background, with names like New Netherland, Tidewater, El Norte, and the Left Coast. The Wikipedia page for the book has a broad outline of the ideas if you want an overview; but, the book is well worth a read if this is an area of interest for you.

  • Huh? In the exact same place on this Pixel and my last three Pixels is the Power button, Double tapping the Power Button on my Android phone opens the camera. Press and hold to talk to Assistant. Hold a long time to open Emergency and eventually call 911 automatically. It's been a option for a long time. It would be nice if Google made these use assignable actions but they already exist.

  • The difference is that guy was working at a major pharmaceutical research firm with animal advocates and whistle-blowers and accrediting board all over them. Musk's group is new and is still in the fucking around phase. As soon as they have to answer to any outside org, suddenly this will be a huge liability.

  • It's not bad, the modern frame doesn't even really change the feel of the story, although the way the rest of the story is presented is also complicated. I recommend reading it, especially if you've seen the movie and enjoyed it.

I was grateful the movie simplified the presentation so that you could really focus on the underlying interesting bits. I left the novel still a little confused as to WTF was going on some regards and the movie makes the essential plot reveals much easier to follow.

  • The novel is made extra strange by a modern day framing story starting the last living ancestors of the two magicians. I read it 20+ years ago and remembered it as a strange book. The movie was excellent and made the whole story make much more sense overall.

  • My kids love something we call "brown eggs" which started out as a keto "oatmeal" recipe in 2012 when they were toddlers.

3 eggs, beaten 1 T butter 1 T peanut butter 1 T almond butter if you are feeling fancy 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon White or brown sugar

Beat the eggs with the ground cinnamon. Scramble the eggs in half the butter until they are just runny, add the peanut butter and almond butter and stir well. Serve while still runny for more oatmeal like spoon pudding or give them another minute in the pan to get them firm and crispy for a more French toast like experience. Serve with more butter and a sprinkle of sugar or cinnamon. You can also add maple syrup.

We swear, this sounds insane when we describe it to other people, but my kids love it and demand we make it for guests

  • Anywhere that sells both advice and supplements is suspicious. True advocacy and medical organizations rarely sell their own supplements. If it's a legit place it will sell you advice and let you buy your own meds elsewhere. Even the optometrist and the veterinarian will give you a paper prescription to buy elsewhere.

I recommend finding a neurologist who deals in ADHD. They are shockingly common and way easier to deal with than psychology and psychiatric practices, in my experience. Neurologists treat it as the neurological difference that you can medicate and cope with, not a mental illness or inadequacy. Such a refreshing experience!

  • The secret is it's ALSO Ikea.

Go to the Ikea website and search for bookcases. The standard Billy bookcase is $89 in my location. It's made of wood veneer over particlebaord. They last about 10- 15 years or so before the glue holding the particles together breaks down and they become fragile.

Then use the Materials option to limit to "Solid Wood", the same size Hemnes bookcase is $250. Same height, similar styling, made of solid wood and going to last much longer.

You can buy solid, long lasting furniture at Ikea, but it's not the cheapest option so people often miss it.

  • Try Nebula! It's a bunch of YouTube creators who got together to make their own platform for video content. The price is quite reasonable and the videos are the same you would see on YouTube but often a few days early and with the sponsorship ads removed.

  • He would have liked it. He was one of the major forces behind RSS which is another great way to let individually owned servers to feed information to many people on their own systems on their own terms. Fediverse is something he would have definitely appreciated.
