Can’t you just use GNURoot Debian and XServer SDL to get a Linux desktop env on any Android phone?

There’s an xda-developers guide on this and the two apps are still in the Google Play Store, so I assume it’s still feasible.

I’m not sure how well it plays with DeX and other similar solutions, though.

That’s assuming the apps aren’t capable enough to handle being used on a desktop on their own, of course. What sorts of gaps did you see, and in which sorts of apps?

Samsung DeX was the first big one but there are a bunch of competing ones that do similar things now.

One thing Ubuntu users should know is that the change will only provide performance boosts when GPUs are handling workloads running the OpenCL framework or the OneAPI Level Zerointerface. That likely means that people using games and similar apps will see no benefit.

What’s been stopping them?

A big part of the reason that Republicans are more able to pass legislation is that smaller states have a larger impact than they should, based on their populations.

Each state has a number of members in the House of Representatives in proportion to their population - 52 for California. Each state has two members in the Senate, so CA has the same amount of power in the Senate as Wyoming, which has a population of under 600k to CA’s 39 million.

Beyond the impact on Congress, the sum of those counts determines the number of electoral votes a state has in presidential elections. So California has 54 electoral college votes.

If California split up into 12 different states, each would end up with 6 electoral votes. The total count in the House would decrease from 52 to 48, and some other state would get the remaining 4 (though even that could be avoided by just having some sub-states be large enough to get 5 Representatives) but the total count of Senators would increase from 2 to 24 and the total electoral vote count would increase from 54 to 72.

Many of the smallest US states are firmly red, which means Republicans don’t need as much popular support to make policy changes. This would help reverse that. Heck, if California went all the way and split into 65 states, each with the population of Wyoming, they’d end up with 195 electoral college votes.

I feel like the US would take over California again if that was the case.

I’m not sure how you think the US would take over CA again, or what the impact would be, if it continued to be part of the US and just split into several different states. Could you elaborate?

I’d much rather California split into 12 different states, each with roughly the population of Nevada.

I’m no expert, either, but this is a solid explanation IMO. It’s why autistic people are prone to sensory overload; their brains don’t filter out noise (like the hum of the refrigerator, the sounds of people chewing, or background conversations) the way that most allistic people’s brains do. It also definitely could have been the reason, or at least contributed to, why the woman from your post was confused - particularly if she was trying to figure out why allistic people did something.

Autism is commonly comorbid with mental health disorders (aka “mental illnesses”) like anxiety, depression, ADHD, etc., as well as with intellectual developmental disorders, but autism is still considered, at worst, a neurodevelopmental disorder, regardless of where an individual falls on the spectrum.

Both the DSM-V and ICD-11 are in agreement about this, for what that’s worth, but you could also just do a search for “Is autism a mental illness?” on Duckduckgo, Kagi, Searx, Bing, Google, or whatever, if you want to confirm.

Copyright applies to unfinished works, too. There are many reasons it might not protect an unfinished work, but those reasons are still relevant even for finished works.

If someone steals your physical drawing, that’s theft. If they take a picture of it, then use the picture - or your picture + modifications - without your permission, particularly in a commercial work, then that’s copyright infringement, but not theft. If they steal your physical drawing and then take a picture and so on, then it’s both theft and copyright infringement.

Most likely this wasn’t considered copyright infringement because the allegedly copied art isn’t copyrightable, e.g., game mechanics; or the plaintiff didn’t own the copyrights themselves and thus couldn’t sue (possibly the arts were still copyrighted by the original artists, having never been purchased; possibly they were stock assets that were re-purchased by the defendant). There are any number of reasons. However, “the work wasn’t published” isn’t one of them.

On the other hand, it’s quite likely they were able to sue for theft of trade secrets for that very reason. And they might have chosen to do that simply because proving copyright infringement is much more difficult.

This happened because the developers allegedly used assets from a game called P3, which was never released, and therefore not subject to copyright infringement claims.

That isn’t how copyright works. Copyright is awarded upon creation of a work, not upon release.

Did you turn it off by using Invidious?

OP is also in the allegedly ultra rare camp of “successfully configured Jellyfin and lived to tell the tale.” Not what I’d expect of someone unable to configure Plex correctly. I’ve not set up a Plex server myself but my guess is it wasn’t clear that it was misconfigured - it did work previously, after all.

If they’re calling it remote streaming when you’re on the same (local) network, that’s not exactly intuitive. I’d say OP’s phrasing was fair.

Is your goal to create things that can be published or used in a project, or to create audiobooks for yourself to listen to?

For voiceovers for text, I use Kokoro Fast API, which has a web frontend. The frontend is only compatible with Chromium browsers on desktop or Android, which sucks as my daily driver is Firefox and an iPhone (there are workarounds in the thread) but it supports voice mixing, speed changes, etc.. It also has an issue where it keeps the models (about 3GB) in memory; I keep the CPU version loaded normally and swap to the GPU version if I need it to be faster. If you want something similar for Bark, check out Bark-GUI.

I’ve also dabbled a bit in some TTS features that have Comfy nodes, though at this point mostly just in terms of getting them set up. For my purposes thus far Kokoro has been fine (and I prefer the FastAPI project over the Comfy nodes for most of my uses), but I’ve found nodes for Kokoro, Dia, F5 TTS, Orpheus, and Zonos.

Autiobooks and audiblez both look promising. A few weeks ago, I used the Kokoro FastAPI web frontend to create an audiobook for an ebook I worked on that used entirely self-hosted AI generation for the outlining and prose. Audiblez, which I found about like two days after that, looks like it would have simplified that process substantially. Still, I’d personally like something more like an audiobook studio, where I can more easily swap voices back and forth, add emotions, play with speed on a more granular level, etc.. I’m thinking about building something that contains that at some point myself, but it’ll be a minute - hopefully someone else will beat me there.

I posted a comment here a few weeks back on a similar topic. I’ve since used OpenReader-WebUI and like it, though that’s not for producing audiobooks, but for a read-along experience. Reproducing the comment below in case it’s helpful for you:

RealtimeTTS is a library that handles that, but I don’t know if there are already any apps out there that integrate it. SublimeText seems to have it. I don’t personally use it but it’s a pretty competent editor and it’s not in the feature table from the Wikipedia page someone else shared.

Sublime 3 was limited to folding by indentation; I’m not sure if that’s true for Sublime 4 as well, but the Markdown plugin docs have a note on folding and mention you can fold by section and heading levels.

Commenting that it’s hostile for them to have a women’s only space might be ironic, but couldn’t possibly be good faith, in that context. And if the same mod banned you from multiple communities, then either it was out of line and you could appeal it, or it was warranted due to the perceived likelihood of you causing problems in those other communities and the perceived low likelihood of you contributing anything of value to them.

It makes logical sense for bad actors to be preemptively banned. Emotions have nothing to do with it.

Right now I have Ollama / Open-WebUI, Kokoro FastAPI, ComfyUI, Wan2GP, and FramePack Studio set up. I recently (as in yesterday) configured an API key middleware with Traefik and placed it in front of Ollama and Comfy, but currently nothing is using them yet.

I’ll probably try out Devstral with one of the agentic coding frameworks, like Void or Anon Kode. I may also try out one of the FOSS writing studios (like Plot Bunni) and connect my own Ollama instance. I could use NovelCrafter but paying a subscription fee to use my own server for the compute intensive part feels silly to me.

I tried to use Open Notebook (basically a replacement for NotebookLM) with Ollama and Kokoro, with Kokoro FastAPI as my OpenAI endpoint, but turns out it only supported, and required, text embeddings from OpenAI, so I couldn’t do that fully on my local. At some point, if they don’t fix that, I’m planning to either add support myself or set up some routes with Traefik where the ones OpenNotebook uses point to the service I want to use.

ETA: n8n is one of the services I plan to set up next, and I’ll likely end up integrating both Ollama and Comfy workflows into it.
