Let 3 or 4 go under as an example to the rest and see if they suddenly find they can make it happen after all? I do feel like there’s some merit to the idea they are gaming the system with lowball bids.
This definitely feels like a “you made your bed now sleep in it” situation. If they underbid to get the grants, that’s their problem. I am so tired of corporate socialism.
The Madwand series and the Amber series by Zelazny. Actually Lord of Light may sort of qualify too? He was big on mixing the two. Roadmarks is another one.
There’s also people writing about magicians living amongst us. Stuff like the Unseen University by Naomi Novak. Very much traditional magic but also taking place in the modern world. Same for An Unkindness of Magicians by Kat Howard. Actually one of the very best from this genre is The Magicians by Lev Grossman.
I also love Strata by Terry Pratchett which is a suitably hilarious take on building a flat planet where magic works in a science universe.
And another idea I really enjoy is books that have applied the principals of science to magical systems. Probably my favorite is The Craft Sequence by Max Gladstone. Magic is basically something like a stock market/economic system and you end up with index funds of souls and so forth. Very strange but fascinating to think about.
Similarly Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett is all about using magic as a system and developing new spells based on known principles of that system. (And using them to steal things.)
I would disable any custom fonts you have added to Windows too. Or at least check them for font conflicts. And check the reliability reporter to see if it says anything in particular about the days when FF crashes.
EDIT: I also just noticed you have a VPN in your plugins. The Firefox VPN used to behave pretty wonkily if it got a bad connection and could look like everything was frozen. This would be my immediate prime suspect if you think it’s extensions.
I also agree a fresh profile is a huge pain but worth a shot if all else fails. It can make a difference when you can’t trace down what about:config you boned horribly haha.
For my money, Dune is by far the better book. But I'd personally stop reading after about the 4th one in the series max (might even stop at 3). They don't hold up well after that I don't think.
This is kind of cheese ball, but have you tried Steve Perry's Matador series? The books aren't very long, but there's quite a few of them. Lots of fun characters and villains and such and it's a light, fun read.
If it's on a Mac, the two things I can think to try are boot without extensions enabled and see if it still happens and flush your caches using a tool like Onyx. Actually, you could also try and redefine what the default sans-serif font it too, just in case that has anything to do with it.
And finally, are you both on a network that might be running through a proxy server first? If so, maybe some protection feature they have turned on is mangling things.
Whatever it is, the smart quotes aren't being represented either in your default sans-serif font or whatever font it's trying to load.
I’ve used this and it worked pretty well. The issue I had was when people start chatting and leave the group pinger in the convo. But that was more of an etiquette issue than a technical issue.
Makes sense. Apple has tied their corporate identity pretty closely to protecting personal privacy and they’ve also set up E2E encryption of iCloud pretty recently (end of last year). Probably just easier to turn off those communication options then to try and deliberately punch holes in the protections they’ve set up.
I kind of feel like karma is pretty much a part of the link aggregator style site’s core usefulness. It’s a quick nod to figuring out if an account is generally well thought of or not and my immediate instinct would pretty much be to block people hiding their karma on here, because it points to an unwillingness to participate in the core voting and being voted on idea.
At the very least, I wouldn’t want accounts that opt out of displaying karma to be able to vote on anything either. All in or stand on the sidelines and watch IMHO.
I like resistFingerprinting = true but it may be a bit much for some people. You lose some keyboard hotkey capabilities in RES and all your windows always open at a certain size upon relaunch/new window.
And yet Siri is dumber than a bag of hammers…
And I say that as someone who has been using Macs since the 512k in high school.
