  • That was a super interesting read. Its amazing she can be so polite when talking about him, i guess time and perspective can do that.

Also for anyone curious, the post nup did not hold up. Justine gets 20k monthly plus an unspecified alimony, in addition to the 15 million she got at the time of the divorce.

  • Lol it was an interesting peak into the depravity of the human psyche 😅

And cannabonsai is super fun! You prune the cannabis kind of like a traditional bonsai tree. Its fun because you can get a complete look in a few months compaired to the years that traditional bonsai takes. It also works really well as a way to keep a graphed mother plant with multiple strains.

I was gonna share a pic of my plant but I cant figure out how to add pictures in my comments that actually show up... so heres a link to some pics :)

  • Both would make sense. Lemmy has definetly had some growing pains and lemmy.ml has been targeted quite a bit recently by bad actors. Plus since its the biggest instance, it is going to be more influenced by the energy of the new sign ups.

I hope as things continue to grow you find friendlier spaces and good discussions :)

  • I think what communities and instances youre on really affect that.

Like ive noticed posts within my instance (solar punk) tend to be very kind and helpful. Likely because it is a small instance full of eco friendly sci fi optimists. I even joined a discord based book club that has weekly voice chats through the instance.

Ive noticed the big conversations that end up in all (often from lemmy.ml) tend to have more bickering and general nastiness. The same was true of reddit, niche things tend to collect fewer trolls because there arent as many people there for them to mess with.

  • I think what people want is very specific, well curated, and active communities about uncommon interests. Things like a whole community that is just 30-35year old redheads wearing cat ears and cleaning their shower in yellow striped thigh highs or something equally as weird and specific.

Like i remember stumbling across a community on reddit that was all about sewing felt vaginas/butts into stuffed animals so people could take their relationship with their favorite plushie to the next level. The community was shockingly active and full of discussion.

Things like that take time and lots of active users to become a thing. Lemmy isnt quite there yet. Same with other kinds of niche interests that havent quite set up shop here yet (for example there are cannabis communities, but nothing specifically for bonsai cannabis)

  • What a great point. The little bits of joy definetly add up to alot more.

Interestingly this is a thing in positive psychology, commonly refered to as savoring. Its a technique of paying special attention to small moments of happiness because they affect our overall mood alot more than big moments people tend to fixate on.

Heres a research article on the topic for anyone interested. the abstract gives a good overview of the concept.

  • Thats a shockingly short period of time. Assuming two why not purchases a week, the average person spends $40,500 in their 78year lifespan.

The two a day spenders total out to $283,600.

  • Yesterday I responded to you in good faith, and tried to give some helpful advice on why this situation happened and how you might avoid it in the future. Reading more of your responses and conversations today, I'm starting to lean on the side of thinking you are just trolling.

You are really streaching for something to be upset about, and seem to be willfully misinterpreting other people. You started by pushing a pedantic argument about the definition of the word politics, and are now turning a moment of accedental misgendering into a accusations of transphobia (against a trans woman who did not know your preffered pronouns).

The community has given you some very kind, thought out, and insightful advice. On the off chance you are not a troll: I really encourage you to step back, get some distance from the situation, and reflect on what everyone has said once you arent feeling so defensive.

  • Ive never been a slave, but i have been homeless & currently work low paying jobs. I really dont think my experience is anywhere even close to that of the countless victims of american chattle slavery, forced prison labor, or sweatshops.

Ive also been raped, and that was an entirely different experience than any sex work ive done. My experiences are also in a completely different category from people who have been trafficked or sold.

I get that its a rhetorical technique to use emotionally charged words to serve a point, and that the term 'wage slave' has a long history in communist writing. My goal was mostly to provide an additional perspective to other people who might stumble on a week old post like I did.

I appreciate that you obviously care about other people, and we clearly agree that the current system is terrible. I hope you get some good praxis in this week, cheers 🍻

Edit to add this reddit post with a good discussion of the employee / slave comparison. Lots of interesting points from both sides:

  • I think the issue was more about forcing intense discourse on people who aren't interested in having that conversation at that moment.

You werent banned for calling out transphobia, you were banned because you were being pedantic and argumentative. Plus you were on a new account so everything all together made it look like you were trolling.

I think if you had stopped after one or two comments it would be fine. My rule is generally to point out something if I feel it needs to be said, then maybe give one more clarifying response, then let it go.

Another choice would be to make a separate post somewhere discussing the neuances of 'disliking politics' -- then people who comment on it clearly want to have that discussion and are opting in.

It seems like the situation triggered you, and sometimes the most productive choice is to step back from the conversation and move on.

Sorry you got banned, i hope you find a new comfy home on lemmy!

  • I know this comment is kinda old, i hope you dont mind me responding.

The notion isnt wrong, but it is misguided and overly simplified. There is coersion under capitalism, but there is also personal choice about how to engage with that system. Sex work is not rape any more than working at mcdonalds is slavery.

Comparing the two reeks of too much theory with too little experience. It is over simplifying things in a way that is troubling because it devalues the intensity, horror, and evil of things like rape and slavery.
