I agree that the situation in the article is complicated and that these homeless people were not exactly saints.

My point above is that these homeless people living in tents in an empty lot in January are worse off than the homeless people in the article that OP references. Those homeless people live in cars in a protected lot which I think is a big improvement from tent life.

Honestly, this is a lot better / more hopeful than other stories. These people are doing far better than the homeless in tents. In winter.

I buy a lot of generic or store brand stuff. Usually I'm comfortable doing this with things that have been around for a long time like bleach, laundry soap, and basic foods. I assume that it is not difficult to do these things so anyone can make it and there's little if any difference between brands.

On this topic: I heard once that you should first buy cheap tools. Use them until they break and then decide what you want to improve about those tools and buy better ones. Often those first tools never break. This seems like pretty good advice for most things.

I did not have any miniDiscs but I did have a SuperDisk in a PC I built which was a complete waste of time and money.

The SuperDisk was a waste. Not my whole PC.
