  • Military service is one of the ways out of poverty we dangle at young people. I can't blame an 18-year-old for wanting in on the GI bill. Student loans suck.

  • My local Lowes turned me off by having their music blaring way, way too loud for some event. Like, needed earplugs on that half of the store loud.

Now Home Depot has turned me off by not having any human-run checkout counters anymore, and all the self checkouts have incredibly distracting "we're recording you" screens. Plus, you know, the politics.

The Ace hardware is still awesome and has a store dog (no outside dogs allowed). Store dog is a friendly, happy lab.

  • It's spring (your hemisphere may vary) and time to set out tick tubes!

Tick tubes are cardboard tubes stuffed with cotton fluff soaked in permethrin. Mice use the cotton to make nests. The permethrin kills ticks on the mice, reducing the tick load of the area. It doesn't hurt the mice, and is much more targeted than just spraying the whole yard for insects.

  • I'm 40 and my partner just reaches out his hand whenever he needs help getting up from the group. I'm the shorter one, so I'm the designated "bottom shelf grabber". He's the one approached at the grocery store by other short people who need help grabbing things from the top shelf.

  • No, I thought capitalists wanted to appeal to mainstream consumers. DEI and pride displays are marketing techniques. Removing them says "nope, minorities aren't worth appealing to".

  • The performance serves as a barometer for how, idk, accepted a thing is. Having LGBTQ displays made me, an LGBTQ person, feel like Corporations thought we were a market worth wooing. Taking that and DEI away is a kick in the teeth. It feels worse than never having the displays or DEI programs in the first place.

  • Bots lie about who they are, ignore robots.txt, and come from a gazillion different IPs.

  • Current plan is to borrow a Switch 2 from a friend in a couple years, to play the games we're really excited for.

Seeing that the "explore the Switch 2” game wasn't included with the system just pissed me off. I'm not paying to play an interactive manual.

  • I don't know what my dad's death certificate says, just that when the doctors removed him from the breathing machine he died. I blame Obamacare. /s

(And I haaaate when people ask me what "he really died of". Like, seriously. Do they hear themselves?)

  • Also that the COVID death numbers were inflated because COVID doesn't kill people, pneumonia and not breathing kills people.

  • I think it can be a (bad) cultural thing. When I told my mom I worried my cousin's new husband was abusive, my mom told me he was "a regular Kentucky man. They're just like that."

(My other cousin confirmed her sister's new husband was an abusive dick, but sister refused to leave him. Other cousin and I both went out of state for college, which helps break indoctrination. We were back in town for a funeral.)

  • TIL. I've bought freeze dried lamb lung for my pups (they love it), but didn't realize lung is banned for human consumption in the USA.

  • Hear me out: when you wear a dress, you don't have to pick out a top and a bottom. It's awesome.

  • What the other person said. You don't need fancy yeast or bottles, either. I did it with 2 liter soda bottles and bread yeast, back in college.

  • The one time I've found a dropped wallet, it had ID for like 5 different people in it. I dropped that off at the local police station and walked away.

My partner lost wallet at a bus stop. It got buried under snow for a season and when the snow melted a month later it was turned in to the police station, who called partner. All his (by then cancelled) cards were still in the wallet, plus what felt like the right amount of cash.

  • Last I checked, cloudflare requires the user to have JavaScript and cookies enabled. My institution doesn't want to require those because it would likely impact legitimate users as well as bots.

  • It's also a huge problem for library/archive/museum websites. We try so hard to make data available to everyone, then some rude bots come along and bring the site down. Adding more resources just uses more resources--the bots expand to fill the container.
