  • I wish they would. It might mean fewer fire alarms tripped by vapes. (I work in a college library and it's not funny have to evacuate the building just because someone decided to vape in a study room.)

  • Walk someone else through editing a config file on the command-line over screenshare? Nano. Omg nano is your friend.

  • The problem with using nano for years is that I now try using nano shortcuts in other programs. Random new windows opening is confusing, until you figure out Ctrl+o isn't save in that program. Then it's just annoying because you still have your inappropriate muscle memory.

  • Oh, and I should mention I'm still reprogramming myself from growing up in a house where we did everything ourselves. Wallpaper? Us. Siding? Us. Roofing? Us. Drywall? Us. Ducting the dryer through the crawlspace? Us. Well, Mom. No way I was going under the house

The only thing I remember being hired out growing up was installing new dormers in the attic and framing the attic into bedrooms.

Partner is the other end, his dad hired everything out growing up.

  • I'm happy to do the straightforward jobs that if I mess up I'm just inconvenienced. Changing the kitchen faucet? If that gets stalled halfway, I'm doing dishes in the bathroom sink for a bit. (TBH I wish I was 3 inches narrower because my undersink area has a divider between the doors and it was an uncomfortably close fit, including moving 1 boob through the space at a time, not fun).

Electrical? I'll swap out GFCI outlets but if that doesn't fix the problem I'm calling a professional.

Painting? Sure, good excuse to get a nice step ladder.

Anything I get stumped on or which takes more equipment than I can fit in my closet (chimney sweep, carpet replacement) gets hired out.

Am considering doing the flooring in my laundry closet, will probably hire it out because I don't want to deal with moving big stuff.

Am very glad we can afford to do these things instead of deferring maintenance. Am also very glad we were lucky enough to be able to buy a condo when we did. Our mortgage+hoa fee today is 2/3 what rent on our old place is today, and we build equity. And this is a 15-year mortgage, which makes the rent comparison even worse.

  • You can also ask a librarian for help. We like finding things and might be able to get a copy through interlibrary loan or other connections. We also like girl scout cookies, especially the ones with coconut.

  • Can confirm: am allergic to latex and use LaTeX. Benadryl and barrier cream are my friends.

  • Not having to wait 45 business days to get your out-of-network claims reimbursed just for your insurance to tell you they never got the claim and please resubmit. Which I've done. At the end of September it will be another 45 business days. This is for a weekly therapy that I expect to be covered 80% because it's out of network but maybe it isn't because fuck me and I won't know until I've been going for at least 15 weeks.

  • I'd also want to see if the adopter has a history of not staying out of jail for more than 6 months at a time. For example: my brother has been arrested at least 21 times over the last 15 years. I don't think his home-life is stable enough to support a pet.

Now, if, say, his roommate wanted a dog, my brother's bullshit shouldn't keep the roommate from getting a pup.

  • It's things like this that keep me using an ad blocker. I was researching when sunflowers develop their seeds, for crying out loud.

Edit: this was on Opera. It's.. fine.

  • Thankfully, I've not heard of that around here. The public library I worked at was chill about everyone visiting, including several people I'd consider "problems": dude that always sat next to the teen section and complained the teens were loud while being louder than any teen, and other dude that would sit in the middle of a row of public computers and turn off the ones on either side because she didn't want to sit next to anyone else.

The only time we kicked anyone out was when someone was vaping. The only time someone got banned was when they were racist in response to being told they couldn't vape in the library.

ETA: "around here" is suburban New England

  • Embrace it. I have a bumper sticker with a rainbow unicorn on it that says "stay weird". Have had it for at least half a year now.

  • Have you tried the new Heinz pickle-flavored ketchup?

  • Could be traveling and was dropped off at the terminal too early to be allowed through security. I've done that---got dropped off at Logan airport at 9 pm for my 6 am flight. It's when I could catch a ride. Ended up sleeping in shifts with some other college students in the same boat, all heading home for winter break.

  • Yep, part of evaluating a work is knowing whose work it is. I'll read a paper on, say, lung cancer by SirTobaccoLobbyist differently than one by DrCancerResearcher. If I don't know whose work it is, it's very hard to contextualize.

  • For some reason, Train to Busan is what springs to my mind.
