  • And despite everything, short of a real war we will continue to trade with the US at a reduced capacity. Which is fine. The goal of our trading strategy ought to be diversification to avoid a monopsony-like situation where any individual buyer is buying enough of our exports to severely damage us if they stop (that is, the situation we're in now).

  • You can get past the Bloomberg paywall by adding a period after the .com

    So, instead of

    put

  • The last datapoint is interesting. All four of the top parties lost a little ground? Where did it go? Surely not all to the PPC, and the Greens don't look like they gained that much.

  • That's pretty dumb, Carney. Our current situation is a product of too much focus on too few export markets. Refusing to expand trade with China is choosing to act with a limb tied behind our back for no good reason.

  • I would rather advocate for socialism within the context of Canada's current democratic system than within the context of a fascist, expansionist USA. I'm sure Quebec sovereigntists feel very similarly about their issue.

  • It's certainly part of what makes him a neoliberal.

Let's have a look at his website, https://markcarney.ca/spend-less-invest-more

In recent years, the federal government has been spending too much.

A Mark Carney-led government’s fiscal policy will focus first on reining in wasteful and ineffective government spending, creating room for personal income tax cuts

Now is the time for a more efficient and effective government—one that delivers better results while spending responsibly. By streamlining operations and reducing waste

A Carney government will focus on maximising the outcomes achieved, while minimising the dollars spent. We will slow the growth of government spending, initially cap the size of the public service

a range of tax measures from Investment and Production Tax Credits to Accelerated Depreciation, that catalyse massive private investment in cutting-edge industries.

A Mark Carney-led government will balance the operating budget in three years

These all come straight out of a conservative campaign. The guy is neoliberal to the core. His great policy proposal is splitting the budget into two columns so he can (in my opinion) run austerity measures on social services while running a deficit to funnel public money into private hands via public private partnerships.

  • Any religious representation is offensive to secularism.

No, I don't agree. Making laws with religious justification is offensive to secularism. A drawing that depicts a person wearing a piece of clothing traditionally associated with a religion is not offensive to secularism.

  • Last fall, city officials confirmed the image would be removed in the name of secularism following complaints that it was offensive.

    Oh?

Please, Montreal City Hall, share with the class what's offensive about that image.
