  • I've never heard it called foreskin, that's pretty funny, but FYI, the proper term is "boot". And I'm a big fan of no boots in the rack. They are nice for desks and places cables might be rearranged constantly, but in switches and backs of servers they just slow you down.

  • I'd say, by my metric of what "Year if the Linux Desktop" is, 2022 was that year. Absolutely everything came together and finally all clicked in. Not saying everything is perfect, but it works, works well, and has support for the majority of games made for Windows.

  • One thing nobody has mentioned here is that paying users devalue the ads for non-paying users. Paying users are more likely to have desposableincomee, and are more valuable to advertisers. If advertisers know that the only people being shown ads are those without the money to buy their products, they won't be willing to buy the ad space.

  • Can't say I've seen that yet, but it is a good point. Your home directory might still get a little messy. I think the thought of using the config to me a user per-desktop environment you test is problem a good idea.

  • I agree with NixOS as a good choice for this. The most important bit for me is it cleans up really well when you switch. Every other distro I've tried tends to leave a lot of mess behind and a lot of duplicate function apps.

  • Can't say I've done extensive research, and Nintendo would be the first company I would assume would ignore standards, but my understanding is that any half decent charger has a sort of power negotiation to prevent such issue. I suppose if you have some cheap dollar store USB-C chargers laying around it might be risky if they too ignore the standards.

That said, I did have a USB-C PD 65w charger fry a laptop. It was, for sure, the charger screwing up though, I even had warning signs I completely ignored. I miss that laptop, it was a good laptop.

  • Although I agree it is risky, emoji are unicode characters, just like any other unicode character. If, and that's a big if, the programmers do their job right, it shouldn't matter if you use an emoji or a random kanji. It's all just another character. That said, I don't trust programmers enough to run the risk. Your password might work fine on the website but then fail on the mobile app.

Someone else said "good luck on the desktop", but Windows actually has an emoji picker built right in. Win+. will bring it up. Another fun fact, usernames and computer names both support the full unicode set on Windows, including emoji. Some fun can be had with that knowledge. I haven't tried it on Linux or MacOS yet.

  • Not related to your point at all, but: The switch uses USB-C. Pretty much any USB-C charger will work. For the dock you do want to make sure it can push enough power, but it's a rather low requirement. I use the same charger for my SteamDeck dock and the Switch dock. It's the great thing about USB-C. But of course gamestop would try to sell you their generic crap instead of an official one.

  • Perhaps your car has poor Android Auto, but for me it works great. I bought an after market stereo which included wireless android auto. No more random disconnects when the usb-c cable is bumped. I turn my car on and within a few seconds my phone automatically connects. Its simple, does the job of giving me media control and maps from my phones, and at least on my 4 year old after market head unit runs real smooth.

Car manufacturers keep cheaping out in the wireless though. So dumb for what is probably $5 in additional costs.

  • The problem with WordPress and the like is maintenance. If you don't keep it up to date, it will get taken by malware. Guaranteed. Any plugins you add increase the risk.

I moved my blog to a markdown based compiled site a long time ago so I didn't have to worry about that upkeep.

  • Boston Dynamics YouTube channel has been filled with silly videos. Often times they are duel function. 1. Build brand awareness through fun videos, and 2. Show the versatility of the onboard systems. In this case they are showing of the ability to navigate a real world human environment and the sensors/cameras that can be fed into other systems for advanced decision making and planning.
