  • I agree with you on that point: Video hosting (or more accurately: bandwidth) is extremely expensive. This is why YouTube is basically a monopoly, despite most of its users being annoyed with it (I presume).

    And isolated, without the rest of Google and Alphabet, it may not be profitable, despite all of the ads it feeds us. But from my understanding, YouTube is yet another data aggregator Google uses to make money. Indirectly I bet YouTube is very valuable for Google, even if YouTube itself is not profitable.

    Yes, I agree. I am getting the impression you are sensing/expecting a shift away from desktops due to the widespread mobile gaming you mentioned. Maybe I am too old fashioned and conservative in that sense but for me gaming should ideally be done on a desktop. Furthermore, I believe that gaming is best experienced and most desirable on a desktop.

  • I'm not a FE dev but I know some JS basics. I imagine the site uses some blink (the chromium engine) specific features or css.

    Sometimes i also think it's for tracking reasons and they deliberately discourage other browsers
