  • This stat seems wrong. It suggests 90% of teenagers have parents who bought an iPhone and handed it down or bought a new one for a kid (or the kid worked for a long time and saved up, etc). So many people have basic phones because of their budget that this seems way off.

Maybe I'll read the article now.

Edit - Read it but still skeptical. Study summary here - https://www.pipersandler.com/teens

  • There is nothing explaining expenditures at all. They state they downsized and eliminated development of VOD. They also said they probably cannot secure additional financing.

I don't find it that hard to believe they burned through that cash. It's a lot of money but they probably signed massive deals with overpriced, incompetent consultants that subcontracted to overpriced, incompetent outsourcing.

They probably also went nuts on infrastructure again through a few layers of b.s., each of which took a cut.

Anyone who thought a site like this was going to be profitable in first few years, or really ever, is nuts. I mean the man ran a casino into the ground.

  • I have lived in Switzerland.

They have mandatory service and many people choose the military service option.

As I understand it, they get basic training and then do annual service. Most people seem to enjoy this as they serve with people from where they grew up and hae a lot of fun (and beer).

Each of these people has a military rifle in their home (and uniform, etc) with live ammo. They are a standing army. A well ordered militia, maybe?

You often see them on the train in fatigues with their weapon on the way to training.

While the Swiss do tragically have "mass shootings", they are not US style terror attacks, typically: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mass_shootings_in_Switzerland

  • My nephew based his life on Dennis the Menace. I was cooking a family and got called out of the kitchen where I was working alone.

Two minutes later I come back in to find this kid (maybe 5?) waving my razor sharp french knife around.

I very carefully removed it from his grasp and when I wasn't using it I put it under a towel at the back of the counter. Told his parents to watch him.

Later he's got it again and a steak knife.

I take all the blades, put them in a box, and put them way up high.

Come back later and he's got a chair against the counter, a box on the counter, and he's heading back up the chair with more of mother's cookbooks to pile up to stand on...

Some kids are a little more extreme.

Edit: cooking a family feast, not a family (see first paragraph).

  • One them has a proven track record of responsible behavior and surround themselves with excellent advisers who use actual facts and reason to make policy decisions. But he's three years older so let's go with the guy who's incoherent, malevolent, craven, and has never seen a success he couldn't turn into a failure.
