  • Not all open world, but:

    • Dying Light 1 has a really fun parkour movement system (haven't played Dying Light 2)
    • Ghostrunner, also kind of parkour-based, really gets you into a flow state once you get the hang of the movement
    • Vanquish is always pretty satisfying IMO, both movement and combat
    • Jet Set Radio or its spiritual successor, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk (different dev, same idea) are really fun, especially with friends
    • The remake of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 is pretty damn good
  • As far as I'm aware, they/them and she/her are both good for Steph. They said on their podcast that they use she/her most often in their personal life (because tiddies and long hair) but either set of pronouns works.

  • I met my wife in 2016 on OKCupid and have been online dating on and off since 2009, when I was 14. My cousin met her husband on Match.com around 2011 as well. Maybe your social circles just didn't take it seriously since you were kids? You would've been 9 in 2010.

At the same time, flashy apps like Grindr and Tinder were starting to really impress people just as the concept of Instagram-style social media was really taking off. A massive amount of people were essentially captivated by the idea of "living on your phone," which was really mainstream and supported by a ton of aesthetically pleasing lifestyle content that seemed to appear almost overnight.

You can imagine that a dating app that highlights your best qualities while minimizing your worst isn't a far stretch from the curated profiles that are all over social media. But since it's still a place for direct messaging, and you do still have the chance to express yourself and talk to like-minded people, some people find that that still allows for genuine connection in some respects.

Even after all these years, the best advice when using these apps is to make a connection and immediately get off of the app in order to move to texting or something instead. Long-term chats are where matches go to die.

  • Oh, I don't mean on an industrial scale. Sorry for any confusion. I was thinking of small-scale artists who have crochet businesses. It might be easier to sell $30 plushies if all of the plushies from Vietnam (and other places known for cheap hand-made products) are now $50.

  • You could check for yourself: https://www.protondb.com/

If a game is rated Gold or above, it's generally good to go on most systems. Platinum is the best rating other than Native, which means it's a game with an official Linux version. Proton is the reason I switched to Linux.

Bronze and Silver games might play fine too, but you'll either have to do some tinkering or it just won't work. It's not that often that these games work "out of the box."

  • I don't think that you understand this very well. You definitely don't need a monopoly in the video media platform space in order to restrict competition to an unfair degree. For example, the forced sale of Fox Sports to Bally in 2021 by the courts in order to retain a small modicum of competition in broadcasting despite the existence of other networks. Maybe you should look into it a bit more before you declare it's not an issue?

  • Society can't do much against laws that actively foster wealth hoarding.

Increase corporate tax rates, shut down loopholes, go after companies that use tax havens, fine corporate irresponsibility commensurate with the damage it causes (no ticky-tack fines), imprison white collar criminals and seize their assets, limit executive compensation relative to the lowest-paid employee, outlaw stock buybacks, etc.

  • I wonder if this is how people felt when Shakespeare invented a bunch of words. Slang turns complicated concepts into shorthand so that, once a definition has been established, more important discourse can occur.

If you're annoyed that you still have to learn new things as an adult, I have some bad news about the rest of your life.

  • I can assure you that you can still access the used market with these limitations since you can arrange to meet others at a public place nowhere near your home. A lot of the groups and sales are on Facebook though, so that's a huge bummer.

But you could also check your local vaping meetups, flea markets, or pawn shops, as well as classifieds websites such as Kijiji or Craigslist (those are the 2 most well-known where I live, your local area may use other websites). You should be able to entirely avoid shipping if vaping is common where you live.

  • Have you considered checking out the used market? I haven't seriously vaped since 2016 when I used it to quit smoking (and all my vape stuff got stolen in a move in 2017), but I remember that the used mod scene was pretty damn good back in the day.

I have a OBS Cube-X that's still going strong and does everything I want it to, so a used single-18650 like that might fit the bill depending on your needs and is probably way less than $100.

  • Volunteering is great (done some non-political volunteer work in the past) but in the re-zoning space local efforts are often de-legitimized by municipal politicians, MPPs, and MPs themselves. They don't want change; I've written to them and they've said as much, once they get through the obligatory "I understand your concerns" spiel. A lot of municipal council members are obsessed with single-family homes and are more than happy to give corporate builders exactly what they want.

Petitions are responded to all the time with empty platitudes, so I have no faith there; they're seemingly only for press attention. They learned from the UK petitions that responding with a nice sentence or two about maybe doing something later on gets the media off their back.

Until we have proportional representation at every level of government and a majority of representatives that are not also landlords, this will probably never change in my lifetime. An actual solution here won't be forthcoming, so all I have (other than complaining about how they always pull this do-nothing crap) is a tiny modicum of hope that the federal Liberals can commit to this small, incremental change and not fuck it up or water it down to the point where it doesn't help anyone and the Conservatives cut it in 5 years.
