  • this is what sucks so much, they fuck it up and make it hard to overwrite, but if you don't overwrite it everyone can still tell what they were trying to do...

  • This is great, and very honourable, but I would just draw Loss.

  • I did say I don't really know how it works😅... But here's what I was thinking:

My limited understanding is that the blockchain works as a ledger. Basically, a list that can verify or confirm the authenticity and provenance of files. The way it's verified is by doing some very complicated math on some particular numbers with properties that allow for their authenticity to be verified but not forged. People have incentives to do this complicated math (that takes up power, time, money, etc.) because the blockchain rewards them with tokens or coins (which could be used to pay for special services on the platform, for example).

So, yes, the blockchain doesn't make files smaller, but it could work to verify their authenticity, and that they have not been tampered with. That way, anyone can host anyone's videos, but the ledger would guarantee that the video is the "original", as well as information about who first posted it, etc...

So instead of videos being hosted on 1 server, videos could be downloaded and made available by anyone to anyone at any time. The videos aren't smaller, but no 1 server would have more burden than any other, and it would be scalable since the users would host their favourite videos. Like torrenting?

Maybe it's not a useful tool in this case, IDK. It was just an ignorant suggestion really, as I said I'm not a dev and don't actually understand any of this... I just want a better YT.

  • Yeah sorry, I just don't know enough about the technology and copyright law; I didn't want to make uneducated statements. I'll read the article you linked though, and thank you for your input!

    ::: spoiler Just one thing...

If an AI developer came into an artist’s studio, grabbed all their paintings and ran out, you can clearly see that’s theft.

With this, the artist is losing possession of their art. AI doesn't take art away, it creates more art based on original works, right? It's more akin to plagiarism than physical theft, though of course plagiarism is very much theft so I think I get your point.

  • I REALLY want there to be a better YT replacement on the fediverse or in some form of decentralized way.

As people are pointing out, videos are very large files, and therefore very expensive to host. The fediverse can mitigate this a little bit, as everyone can host their own videos on their own server, but that's not enough, and extremely inconvenient.

I do wonder if the blockchain/torrents can be used here... I'm not a dev or anything so IDK how any of it really works, but I think something to that tune is gonna be the only way, since traditional servers don't seem to be viable.

  • I would assume the overall pain and discomfort would be very intense and would probably interfere with her ability to stretch. She does feel pain, y'know.

  • Crazy, that's the power of a respected name in the industry.

  • As another user pointed out, as long as capitalism has control, there will be no good solution.

I think about it this way: does knowing art is AI generated take away from the experience?

    • If the answer is yes, then it simply will never take over. As long as we have some sort of law that requires art to be tagged as AI if it's AI generated, then I think that would be enough. No need to tag original (human) art with anything, no need for that kind of surveillance, just tag AI art or make companies legally required to divulge if it is so.
    • If the answer is no, then I think this is just the natural progression of things. There will always be artists, and there will always be people that want their art to be made by a person. But if most people really don't care if there's a person behind the brush, then it doesn't matter if it's AI or not.

I don't think anyone has a right to what they do. If you're an artist, that's all good, but if your art isn't appreciated, if people prefer AI over your art, then why should we block AI? Just so you can keep making money off your drawings? There's other things you could be doing... Once again capitalism makes it so that hobbies can't just be hobbies, "if you're not making money you're failing", so this isn't a very satisfying perspective, but the reality is that you don't need to be just an artist, you can have a job and draw for fun, post things online, etc.

Ideally, we tell capitalism to fuck off. We already produce enough to feed, clothe, house, and heal all of the world, we don't do it only because the oligarchs choose not to, as it's not profitable. If we set up a system that actually makes use of the value generated by labour, instead of letting the 1% hoard it, then AI would not be threatening any job security, and it wouldn't be stifling creativity or anything, it would just be a tool.

There is the issue of copyright though, since original works are used to train AI. That whole debacle is a can of worms that I will not open.

  • Honestly, I think Lemmy could be the perfect social media.

The only things missing are video and user-feeds. If Lemmy could add the ability to follow users (rather than just communities) and a feed that shows you only posts from those users, that would already make it better than Instagram and Twitter/Mastodon, IMO. AFAIK videos are very hard to do, but if Lemmy could add great video support (a good video player and embeds), then it could be better than YouTube.

There are many things that Lemmy is trying to do right now, but not doing very well, such as direct messages and UI, so it's not perfect by any means, but I believe it's going in the right direction and trying to do the right things to get there. And, of course, it doesn't have enough content or people to be infinitely browsable yet.
