  • Oh wow. That's useful. Thanks for that. I had no idea that page existed. I've looked for this before and even looked again before my last comment. Where is that even found? Lemmy can be frustrating.

    Why are you so hostile?

Because your suggestions are rude and that seems intentional.

Your suggestions require a preposterous amount of effort for something that is best solved by letting the user block this kind of content, like being able to block domains or content federated from certain platforms. Even with this useful page, having to pour through the giant list for every possible instance to maybe find one that doesn't federate from those platforms, but then who knows what else I'd be sacrificing for that one thing. That's not a useful suggestion by any stretch. Suggesting running an instance is also a ridiculous answer as a solution that requires a significant amount of time, some extra resources, and then a continuous amount of time for maintenance.

You're not far off from just saying "Just don't use the internet. Problem solved!" Do you see why making suggestions that are ridiculous to 'solve' a proportionally smaller problem is rude?

  • Where do I find this list of what instances are federated? That doesn't exist? Oh well that's not useful is it?*

Requiring someone to sift through each instance in the hopes of finding one that happens to not federate with these kinds of platforms is an unreasonable suggestion.†

Run my own instance? Fuck off with that. I don't have the time.

Your 'solutions' are not real solutions. It's a cop-out of accepting the fact this is a limitation of Lemmy and the federation system that all these are based on.

*edit: This does exist, apparently. Though I have no idea where a person is supposed to find that page on their own. I've looked for this before multiple times.

†Added point after being shown the list exists.

  • AI will never make a good enough translator. It can work for basic translations, but even then it has big failures. Assuming those small things could be resolved (but only to an extent since it could never be 100%), it still will fundamentally never be able to fully replace a person.

  • It's not that you shouldn't do it at all, but something to keep in mind while you take the time to learn the platform. You can create the community and keep it private while you learn the moderator tools.

  • First, Lemmy is not reddit. They are similar platforms, but they share still drastically different. More importantly, I'm specifically talking about the platform, not the general idea of managing a "community" in the broader sense.

For example, knowing modlogs exist and understanding the modlogs and that they are public. Also understanding how users from different instances interact with other instances. Where to find the moderator tools and information regarding moderation.

It seems you want to run a community entirely off of a mobile device using an app, but none of the apps are really fully compatible with moderation tools. The best way to moderate is via a browser.

There's just more to running a community than just clicking the create button, deciding on a name, and posting content.

  • Since you got the answer you were looking for. I'd like to address this:

My doctor said if I have ADHD, that it's not bad enough to do anything about.

That response is just awful. How would they know? If they knew the bare minimum about these types of conditions, then they would never say anything like that (i.e. masking symptoms to try to 'fit in' and such). Otherwise, if they don't know enough about the subject, then they shouldn't be acting like they do. A doctor should be familiar with saying something like "let me look into that more."

Undiagnosed and unmanaged ADHD (and/or autism and general anxiety disorder, which are comorbidities) leads to a drastic increase of the likelihood of developing drug abuse and addiction, and even an increase in mortality rates and decreased life expectancy (link) among other issues.

  • To be completely honest, I suggest getting to know Lemmy first. Trying to run a community when you can't even figure out how to create one is a sign that you'll run into other even bigger walls. It's definitely like trying to run before you can even walk.

  • Let n be an image of Arnold Schwarzenegger in the wilderness surrounded by animals with social media icons overlayed because someone was too lazy to spend 10 seconds finding a clean copy of the image.
