  • And I have no intention of living off the technological grid to mitigate that.

I would argue that you are already living off the technology grid. Before starting my FOSS journey, every software I used was a dull 'Just click here and let the algorithm do it's job'. By beeing conscious about the software I am using now, I accidently found a lot of joy in technical things, feeling a lot more 'on' the technological grid than before.

Can you elaborate on what doomsday scenario you're referring to?

I am not the commenter above, but my greatest fear with all those data hungry companies is the control and power we give to not elected entities. Knowing all about every person in a state and knowing how to use this data for targeted ads, targeted video recommendations, targeted search results,..., could make a difference in elections and law making. It is basically undermining democracy, and I am a big fan of real democracy.

  • I bought a Microsoft Surface Book 2 when I wasn't converted yet. BUT: now it kind of rules. There is a custom Linux Kernel for Surface devices, everything except the camera works now. That means especially: attach and detach the screen from the Keyboard and use the pen with all it's features.

I wouldn't buy a surface device now, because I don't want to support Microsoft. But if you find a Book 2 for cheap, this would be a possible solution to your search.

  • Firstly, (assuming self-hosting isnt an option) won't you have to use google or AWS to host your website?

It makes me very sad, that there are many people who believe that the internet comes down to Google, Amazon and Facebook.

  • The devil's advocate forgets why the data has a value in the first place. It is used to control and manipulate to the point where elections can be won by the party that has a better understanding of advertisement and the value of the data of their costumers/voters. Thinking you are immune to manipulation because you know you are manipulated sadly doesn't work. Don't use free services if you know they act in bad faith.

  • I think org-roam in emacs is the same? I now never work on something without copying everything into an org-file and commenting it. And I am so happy when I want to do something I have done before and just be able to follow along my own notes.

  • I am a total beginner in this regard, but maybe maybe this could help you:

Check out PBR - policy-based-routing. On OpenWRT there is an app for this task, vpn-policy-routing (together with luci-app-vpn-policy-routing for a GUI inside LuCi). This app helped me to route all traffic coming from my PiVPN to the WAN interface, instead of my commercial NordVPN. Now at home all my traffic goes to NordVPN and when I am not at home I can easily VPN into my home network.

    https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/network/routing/pbr

Other than that, the OpenWRT Forum is very helpful, don't hesitate to ask your questions there.

  • I hope selfhosting becomes even more convenient. It already is for tech savy people, but I mean 'buy a Pi and press a button'-easy. It would take away the power of so many big companies.
