  • Reddit is still one of the biggest websites online. Hardly anyone outside of tech circles is familiar with Lemmy or the fediverse.

  • I use https://searx.be/ with both Google and DDG results enabled. Otherwise if you want something like Google results you would have to use Start page, although they pay Google for access to their search so you would be indirectly supporting Google.

  • And what will that accomplish? The Kim family are horrible leaders, but this comment is unhinged. Torture will not undo anything they've done.

  • That's not really how it works. It would only make them look stupid if they did that, and increase the risk of being voted out in the next election. Because of the filibuster, legislation generally needs 60 votes in the Senate before it goes to the president. Democrats have 51 seats, with two frequent defectors. Imagine if Biden's record going into 2024 is that he vetoed every single piece of legislation.

  • Democrats have a slim majority in the senate, which is not enough to get whatever they want done without compromising, especially considering that two senators are not as left wing as the rest of the party.

As far as war and military spending goes, I agree that the party could do better.

  • First they came for the Communists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Communist

"they" in this poem is referring to anti-semites, specifically Nazis. Germany is doing the right thing by censoring and excluding anti-semites from society, to ensure that what this poem describes will never happen again.

  • People who go online on sites like Lemmy to discuss politics are usually strongly in favor of one party over the other. However, not everyone who votes in elections is like that. There are many moderate or swing voters. Presidential elections in particular are decided by a few key swing states. There is also an expectation that the Congress and the Courts could be a check on each other and on the President, so sometimes people vote for a candidate that they don't fully agree with. Debates aren't always about which candidate or party has a more agreeable stance on the issues, but rather which issues are the most important.

  • He appointed three SCOTUS justices who proceeded to overturn Roe v Wade. Trump is responsible for abortion being illegal in more than a dozen states. But because he's not focusing on it in his 2024 campaign the media will somehow say he's "vague" on the issue. If Trump is elected you can certainly thank The New York Times for downplaying his threat to women's rights.

  • If you see something like that, it's best to block and report the user.

  • Making profit from mass murder is not human nature.

  • The point is to influence the election next year, not to make money

  • UnitedShitcare will milk you for every penny and piece of sanity

  • US Mobile and Visible both offer plans with prioritized Verizon data.

  • As a trans person, I feel far safer on Lemmy and mastodon than I ever did on any other social media.

  • There hasn't been an election in Gaza since 2007, 16 years ago. Maybe they could have at least tried to have some sort of democratic process in that time? Palestine needs to appeal to the international community for support in negotiating with Israel. I agree Israel has not handled the situation humanley and has not done their best to negotiate peace either. However, Gaza is definitely not going to get anywhere under their current leadership, and this war had no chance of success for them, and their situation does not justify attacking or kidnapping civilians.

  • What would you do in such a situation

Probably not kidnap and kill civilians from the other side, and not use civilians on my own side of the line as human shields when the other side retaliates, and not murder civilians on my own side of the line to prevent them from escaping, all of which would end up making the whole situation for the people on my own side so much more miserable and violent.

The options are probably to have free and fair elections while conducting peace negotiations with the support of the international community. All of which have been thrown out of the window now in favor of another violent war that will certainly be lost.

  • The oppressions of Palestinians is horrible and it is Israel's responsibility to rectify that. However, it does not give justification for Hamas to attack civilians. Hamas must have known what would happen but they went forward with the attack anyways.
