This must be a very difficult decision. It heavily affects China, as Irans biggest trade partner for oil, as well as the other exporting gulf states Iran tried to normalize relationships with during the last years. Oil prices will go up, Putin will benefit.

I know people use YouTube differently, but for me it always was a platform for "video sharing". I don't really watch YouTubers, but use it for funny videos, stuff from our publicly funded broadcast channels, music videos. So I guess I am not really using it for channels that require ads. Also I do not watch ads at all at any time due to ad block, and never would.

To be fair, Iran is an authoritarian theocracy that has called for the total annihilation of Israel. That may agree with what many crazy people on Lemmy want too, but it cannot really be called defensive. It's not as Iran just wants to "be left alone". In the eyes of Israel Iran is an existential threat, therefore the attack did not come out of a vacuum.

Well, I am not really familiar with other fediverse services, so maybe Lemmy is a special case. But I can't comment on peertube or follow someone on Mastodon. In theory it is connected, but in reality it's not fully implemented yet.
