  • Sex work is legal where I live. Nevertheless there is a lot of crime related to the sex work sector, human traficking, sexual abuse of minors, gangs etc. However I think it would be much worse if it was not regulated in anyway. My personal opinion - I would rather live in a world without it. Personally I would never go to a hooker. Most important thing though is that sex workers can decide for themselves and are not forced to do sex work (may it physical force, drug addiction or just no other way financially)

  • In my field we use AI a lot for classification task that would need too much manual labour otherwise. We train the model for a specific task which will stay the same for a long time. We use statistical models to validate the results, and they are correct. The model will always be used for this task and we are happy we can use it. We actually do not care how the model did it, we are only interested in the result. Using XAI (explainable AI) we can actually can get pretty far in answering the question how the model works "mathematically" if we wanted. But of course we cannot infer causality from it.

There are so many tasks that can be solved by AI that are not critical, I see no reason why we should not use it in science until we found the real math behind the processes. The topics that are covered by media have to be discussed critically, the whole debate around GPT and the huge models big tech is building, but there is so much use of AI in other uncritical fields the public is just not aware of.

  • That's the point. This liberal vs conservative isn't even working for the US. In an international community like Lemmy it's even worse, as what people from the US define as left and right does not work for western Europe for example. In Germany liberal in a modern sense is seen equal to neoliberal, what is democrats for US is right conservative for us, what is left in Europe is communism for the US and so on, you get it.

It may work for parties on a regional level, but for individuals, forget it.

  • There are only few devices with an easy to replace battery and I get some cynical vibes from your comment so you are probably aware. There are even less devices in the price class between 200 - 300€, a lot of people can't afford the Fairphone. Hopefully the EU will deal with that shit soon.

  • Yep. You need to make a lot of requests to make a site go down, especially for a longer time. And for that you need a lot of computers. I doubt a lot of people have some sleeping bot nets available that they can use whenever a site admin was mean to them. DDOS as a paid service is pretty established nowadays, so imagine some guy investing his valuable buttcoins for this shit.
