  • macOS is BSD-based—so technically that’s been true for about 22 years

  • I’d also be curious to see the inter-province migration statistics for the rest of the country

  • Putting these numbers into perspective, here are the immigration stats by province:

    • Prince Edward Island: 2,665
    • Newfoundland and Labrador: 3,490
    • Nova Scotia: 12,650
    • New Brunswick: 10,205
    • Quebec: 68,685
    • Ontario: 184,725
    • Manitoba: 21,645
    • Saskatchewan: 21,635
    • Alberta: 49,460
    • British Columbia: 61,215
    • Yukon: 455
    • Northwest Territories: 235
    • Nunavut: 45

  • Well put! I really like your point about acceptance of the fact that it may never compete with commercial OSes in terms of ease of use…and that’s okay.

  • I’ve never heard the term “space opera” before, but I like it!

  • I can’t wait to play this! Quake II and Quake III Arena are my all time favourite games. God they were just so cool when they came out. Quake II especially was light years beyond anything else out at the time. And they were FAST too!

  • The Three Body problem is a bit more science fiction-y but it has a similar type of pull that The Martian or Project Hail Mary has. Hard to stop once you start.

Also anything by Neal Stephenson would be appropriate. Particularly Seveneves or Snowcrash.

  • Another vote for Seveneves.

Hell, anything by Neal Stephenson is going to be a win.

  • This might be an unpopular opinion here, but it’s not a myth. If you have hardware that isn’t widely supported it can require some serious technical chops to get things working. Open source is wonderful and a net positive but it can also lead to quite a bit of abandonware, which leaves novice users in a tricky position when things stop working correctly.

I love linux, I use it every day—and it’s way more approachable than it used it be. However it is still very much rough around the edges.

  • It’s simply not worth it. I used Wayland for a couple years but ended up switching back to X11 on nVidia hardware.
