  • Hi there! I’m a Canadian but grew up around Maryland, came back to Canada about 25 years ago. Vancouver island and the coast in general is really expensive, and there’s no rentals unfortunately. Personally I don’t think people here are opposed to newcomers, it’s just the squeeze on the already strapped housing that’s pisses people off. We’ve had decades of rich folks (from all areas) buying summer homes and taking away places for people to live. That being said, if you’re a good person, and you seem to be from your responses, people will see that.

One place I haven’t seen mentioned is Smithers. I really like that town! Super cute, has a brewery and all the stores downtown actually have businesses in them. Added plus of a ski hill you can see from downtown. Not ridiculously expensive either, for bc. Will get cold in the winter, obvs, but I saw you lived in Vermont so nothing you can’t handle. Also shout out for Vermont! I spent my summers there as a kid, miss it something fierce. Personally I love Fernie but it’s just as expensive as Victoria since it’s Calgarys Whistler. If you are really keen on the coast Powell river is good, also Campbell River and Port MacNeil. All three would be places I’d move.

I’m not in the tech field at all so can’t help with that part but pm me if you have any questions about the coast or stuff like that. Good luck friend, may we all get through this.

  • Thank you for your response! That’s really good advice. I can hold off for a bit, Joplin is my main service that I’ll need to be able to reach, but can keep using Dropbox to sync for now.

One thing that I haven’t quite sorted is our todos. We use Todoist right now, and it’s really great, but would like something self hosted. I haven’t found anything that has both an iOS and android app though, except Nextcloud. Any suggestions? I was contemplating just using Nextcloud to start to keep things simple, and then adding different services later, but Yunohost seems like a better solution.

  • Building my home server. I have all the parts but the sheer amount of different ways to set it up and all the things I need to learn to keep it safe. Especially now that all that (waves hand around) is happening, it’s so important I get on it. It kinda makes me want to cry. My brain isn’t as sharp now that menopause has hit, remembering things is really hard. Though my dr got me on a different regime of my adhd meds so hopefully that will help. Anyways, sorry for the ramble.

*I have looked at the self hosted and privacy communities, I think I’m going to go with Yunohost. It’s the internet part I’m worried about more.

  • That soup looks delicious! And it’s one I can eat as I’m allergic to tomatoes. I’m going to try it this weekend :)

I love that yall have such an appreciation for kale, it doesn’t get as much love in North America. Yet another reason I’d like to visit!

  • Its real name is Lacinato kale, it’s my favourite!

Edit: I like to use this in place of spinach, in lasagnas, soups, salads. Nettles are another favourite. I forage in the spring, steam them to get rid of the sting, and then freeze them in balls. Then I just add a ball to soups or whatever when I need. Also can save the steaming water for stocks.

  • Oh my gosh yes. My dad is a complex person, I do have a lot of sympathy for him, but that only goes so far. The healthiest way I’ve found is a sporadic email convo a few times a year.

  • My husband and I have been together for 19 years. In that time he has met my dad exactly once. As we’re standing on the front porch, watching my dad drive away after the visit, he turns and looks at me and says “now I get it”.

  • Same. I live on an island and the only way to sell anything is on two fb groups. Craigslist is there but half the time you get people on the big island and have to take a ferry to sell. I’m thinking of starting a small website/app, not sure it will take off though.
