Scientists use Age of Empires 2 to investigate how ants wage war

  • In any other job, someone would be fired for blocking the rest of an org/team/company from accomplishing something. it feels crazy that we draw so many exceptions around politicians. It often just feels like a bunch of rich fucks flaunting the power they've bought.

  • Details matter here. Here's a few from the study:

ChatGPT achieved an overall accuracy of 71.7% (95% CI 69.3%-74.1%) across all 36 clinical vignettes. The LLM demonstrated the highest performance in making a final diagnosis with an accuracy of 76.9% (95% CI 67.8%-86.1%) and the lowest performance in generating an initial differential diagnosis with an accuracy of 60.3% (95% CI 54.2%-66.6%). Compared to answering questions about general medical knowledge, ChatGPT demonstrated inferior performance on differential diagnosis (β=–15.8%; Plt;.001) and clinical management (β=–7.4%; P=.02) question types.

At the time of the study, 36 vignette modules were available on the web, and 34 of the 36 were available on the web as of ChatGPT’s September 2021 training data cutoff date. All 36 modules passed the eligibility criteria of having a primarily textual basis and were included in the ChatGPT model assessment.

All questions requesting the clinician to analyze images were excluded from our study, as ChatGPT is a text-based AI without the ability to interpret visual information.

  • This is the most wtf headline i've read today.

It wasn't any of the people who put in work to propose this or push it forward. Their job is literally to represent people in their district or to do things that will benefit them. They didn't give up a fucking kidney.

  • This is such a shit show.

The ruling, written by three judges appointed by Republican presidents, comes after the 5th Circuit temporarily blocked an order that had put wide ranging restrictions on the Biden administration’s communications with social media firms. That order had included a wider range of government agencies, including the departments of Health and Human Services, State and Homeland Security as well as the U.S. Census Bureau. The 5th Circuit removed them.

Our democracy was not built to handle the 21st century technologies. lol

  • There's still a lot, but they're generally niche or are more business related (eg. answers.microsoft.com). Hosting fees and technical knowledge have lead to many people just using reddit or facebook groups.

For gaming there's places like ResetEra and I think SomethingAwful still has their forums going.

There's a ton of support group like ones, often related to certain medical conditions.

  • Imagine if Texas didn't hate it's residents enough that they allowed their state electricity grid finally connect to other states utility grids so this wasn't a problem and it reduced prices for the people in Texas (and even prevented deaths from recent strains during extreme weather)!

  • In this particular case, it's a bit more complicated.

I suspect the majority of 30x0 & 40x0 card sales continue to be for non-gaming or hybrid uses. I suspect that if pure gamers stopped buying them today for months, it wouldn't make much of a difference to their bottom line.

Until there's reasonable competition for training AI models at reasonable prices, people are going to continue buying their cards because it's the most cost-effective thing -- even at the outrageous prices.

  • I've met a ton of people that just don't care. The problem often isn't that they don't know companies are collecting a shit-ton of data. That's really not new or isolated to tech companies.

"If I get better ads and it saves me time, what do I care?"
"I'm getting something for free. What does it matter if they know?"

"It's too much work to avoid"

  • Absolutely, but you still have to learn that and it's still work. Early on I had no idea how many credits "a lot". Their defense/damage system is arguably unnecessarily complex in a way that adds to this. Do I need more corrosion protection, radiation, airborne, or thermal? Does it even matter?

Even with some of the advances, it still like an artificial problem that doesn't actually make the game any better. It doesn't really add any difficulty or challenge, and it's certainly not "fun". There's still a lot of streamlining they could do.

  • Absolutely, but video game designers actually amplify the issue by making so much useless shit able to be picked up and adding so many mechanics into a game, where as TTRPGs are often more focused. Starfield (or any bethesda game really) has hundreds of useless items that people can sell, random loot drops, and resources for multiple forms of crafting. It's a fantasy future where we could just let folks "teleport" to a private satellite storage facility or something similar to a bag of holding. Instead we just make gamers focus on inventory management which I doubt anyone finds "fun".

I think there's a delicate balance and I don't think we've hit it. I would love to see some data about how much time people spend doing inventory maintenance in the course of common RPGs. It's one of those modern things like making expansive worlds without fast travel that just feels unnecessary.

  • Can't imagine a world where anything they come up with has any bite or actually correct any of the ongoing problems. The number of cases where justices should've recused themselves for conflicts of interests seems to just keep growing.
