  • If anyone is old enough to remember when cable first showed up, it followed a similar path. They had to complete against "free" over the air TV, so cable had to be a good deal at first to get subscribers.

Once they got the frog in the pot, they slowly turned up the heat.

The next stop for streaming will be the prominent platforms jockeying to be the next "cable" monopolies.

The sales pitch will be "buy a package of channels at a discount" over individual.

It has already begun. Amazon, Apple, Hulu all resell other channels. HBO re-branded their entire channel just to start carrying non-HBO content.

Bigger platforms will leverage subscriber base to lock in content deals so the smaller ones won't be able to compete.

Consumers will get some deals until smaller players are choked out, but as soon as they can companies will start the dry anal rape that only a near monopoly can deliver.

  • Definitely mixed feelings.

I really hate the idea of giving him any platform to try to turn the trial into a reality shit show. The worst thing that you can do with an attention seeking child is to give them attention.

The flip side is transparency. The more transparency, the less opportunity for outright lies about the process. No amount of truth and reality will matter to the kool-aid chuggers, but there are still some with one foot still in reality.

  • Driving on the highway and some douche was weaving in and out, then cut us off. Missed hitting us by an inch.

We immediately said, "I wish there was a cop right there...". And there was .. Cop saw the whole thing and immediately kicked on the lights and got that asshole. We were hanging out the window cheering when we went by the traffic stop.

  • Free speech has always had a line that is fluid until ruled on by a court.

This is news because the judge just drew the line regarding this case.

She is not going to even entertain any free speech bullshit if he leaks any privileged discovery information.

  • Christie sucked Trumps balls for years and fucked up being Gov so badly that he couldn't get elected dog catcher.

That being said, I do give him credit for being the only prominent Republican pointing out the Emperors New Clothes.

You know shit is fucked when Christie is the only voice of reason in the room.

  • The next republican president or governor in states where he is convicted at state level will just pardon everything.

The constitution, rule of law, and will of the people means nothing to people who just want power.

  • In the show Alone the take away is that fat beats skills. All of the super fit "survival experts" with 5% body fat are being carried out on stretchers in a couple of weeks. The 300lb dude with minimal skills out lasts all of the experts.

The environment just doesn't have enough fat calories available. Skill won't change this.

  • UPS batteries are really dangerous because you cannot turn them off. They are also high enough voltage and current to harm you through arc flash and burns.

The other thing with small UPS batteries is that there are usually multiple batteries. There are fuses between the battery string and the circuit board but not between each battery in the string.

OP may have connected batteries wrong or he put a new battery in a string with a shorted/dead battery.

Whenever you are going to string multiple batteries together always disconnect batteries and check voltage on each separate battery to make sure that they are the same or very close in voltage. If different charge to the same level. Any difference in voltage between the cells will cause current flow that can cause a fire hazard.

  • Some massive computer data centers have a giant version of this as a backup system in case the main cooling system goes down.

The one place that i know can use more power than 6000 homes and all of that power turns into heat. Cooling is critical and they need lots of it. They have a giant water tower that they can dump through the chillers if they need to.

  • KDE.

Back when everyone was failing horribly trying to come up with a new desktop that nobody wanted KDE was the only one to get it right.

Instead of trying to shovel some bullshit "next generation" interface down your throat they decided to make all of the interface parts modular.

If you want traditional start menu you can have it, want Mac style dock got that covered, want a touch/table type interface it's in there. If you can't make up your mind you can setup activities to flip back and forth.

  • A federation is just a group of entities that has agreed to work together.

De-federating means that you don't want an entity in the group so you refuse to work with them.

For the threads situation. Say all of the nerdy kid's in high school decided to make a club (current fediverse) and one of the popular kids (meta) wants to join, but the existing nerdy kids in the club feel that the popular kid is really only joining to take over and ruin their club. Many of the nerdy kids will ignore the popular kid to try to freeze him out of the group (defederate).

Some existing members try to block, some will accept, and some will wait and see what happens. In all cases the popular kid has already disrupted and created divisions in the original club members.
