  • Then why did you post this?

Those familiar with the Clinton-era Reinventing Government push say it holds lessons for both how to remake the federal bureaucracy and the comparatively meager savings that can be achieved from such an effort.

“We did it without a constitutional crisis,” said Elaine Kamarck, who ran Reinventing Government as a senior Gore adviser in the 1990s. “Unlike these people, we didn’t think there were vast trillions in efficiencies. ... Their mandate is only to cut. Our was: Works better, costs less.”

“It requires speaking out. It requires saying, ‘That violates the law, that violates the authorities of the executive,’” said Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska.

  • That's actually the point of the article. Just a bad headline from the editor.

But the Reinventing Government project was nearly the opposite of the abrupt, chaotic Musk effort, say those who ran it or watched it unfold. It was authorized by bipartisan congressional legislation, worked slowly over several years to identify inefficiencies and involved federal workers in re-envisioning their jobs.

“There was a tremendous effort put into understanding what should happen and what should change,” said Max Stier, president of the Partnership for Public Service, which seeks to improve the federal workforce. “What is happening now is actually taking us backwards.”

  • It's a trade-off for sure, but they're both free/FOSS. So it's worth test driving both.

I used primarily open office and Libreoffice 10-15 years ago and it was dated then but competitive. Trying it this year left me feeling like it hadn't gotten much interface work in that time.

I really wish the team would invest in a serious overhaul that's long overdue. The back end, especially when it comes to huge files, outperforms onlyoffice by a mile. But for me, only office is faster to use because the navigation is so much easier.

  • Hezbollah couldn't decide if they wanted to be an armed wing of Iranian influence in Lebanon or a legitimate political party. They can't have both. I hope the next leader doesn't make the same mistakes.

  • Or OnlyOffice. It lacks a lot of features but is an easier sell in a lot of cases because of the much more modern interface.

  • I have a good friend who is a federal regulator who works remotely. The department has a few desks in Washington DC that the staff basically rotates through when they do important filings. They are shared by 50-100 people, which is fine because they don't need them for more than a couple days a year.

The department actually needs the regulators out in the field. They closed most of the field offices to save money, since the work can be done from any computer. The only address is the DC office, which is also significantly downsized.

    1. Just from a basic logistics perspective, this does not work.
    2. Making it work would require making thousands of expensive new rentals over months just on the face of it.
    3. Department of Government "Efficiency"
  • You assume they haven't already been planning for months, or years.

  • I was just talking to a friend yesterday who mentioned that the conditions for China to invade Taiwan will be optimal in three weeks based on the ocean conditions and ship movements.

I said even if Trump wants to be the "president of peace" and avoid interfering, the generals wouldn't allow the inaction. I think my exact words were, "he would have to fire them all in the next two weeks."

  • I never thought I'd be more fearful than grateful for Mitch McConnell's exit from politics.

  • Wings in invertebrates developed differently from those in vertebrates. Yes, vertebrates' wings developed from their forelimbs (birds, bats, etc.), but invertebrates' wings are a separate system entirely. Hence ants have 6 legs, whether they have wings or not.

  • I once heard a talk by Bill Gates about his charity work through the Gates foundation. He described how he and Melinda had dedicated tens or hundreds of millions to causes. But the best money he could spend was in petitioning the government to join the cause. Because for all the wealth and power and notoriety held by the billionaire class, it was still a drop in the bucket compared to what world states could do. It's a difference of orders of magnitude. The difference between a thousand dollars and a million dollars? That's the same as the difference between a million and a billion. World governments operate in the trillions.

    This is a coup.

Musk the Billionaire is small potatoes compared to Musk at the levers of government finance. It's like a leaky faucet compared to a firehose. The one holding that firehose controls where it goes.

This is a coup. It is establishing an unelected oligarchy at the core of the Federal Government with the power to influence and manipulate policy, and execute unofficial policy through financial pressure. It's not anything new to history, and it's not 5-D chess. It is just people in power grabbing more power for themselves at the expense of all others including elected officials. In other words, a coup.

  • Our military is about to get hacked, isn't it?

Not to stereotype, but aren't there a lot of trans people running this country's infosec?

  • Almost like saving money wasn't the point of dismantling the government
