  • Some communities use a "santabot" to auto-ban accounts with more downvotes than upvotes. I've never seen it happen to someone who didn't deserve it.

  • Being in an international relationship, I'm sure you understand how tricky and stressful some of these paperwork matters can be. Just deciding what type of visa to apply for when you are in a relationship can be taxing.

You are right that for the majority of people, the bureaucracy works as long as you file things correctly. They should have done it right from the start. But there are a lot of personal situations that can complicate it.

As an aside, it is mind boggling to me the number of immigrants who wholeheartedly support Trump, even with family ties that are endangered by his actions.

  • Good moderation eliminates trolls pretty quickly. Admins are incentivized to respond to users' concerns rather than a profit motive. Some communities do have a minimum account age for certain actions, and some instances require a real email address and IP address to join/participate.

Trolls are bots are rare on Lemmy. They are the norm on reddit.

  • Exactly - Reddit specifically and intentionally uses dark patterns to reinforce the importance of karma at every turn. The first interaction that someone has with Reddit is usually "you don't have enough karma to post/comment/vote in this subreddit." There are secret communities and public awards for high karma earners. There is a frontpage dedicated to rapid karma-earning posts. There is no disincentive for karma farming reposts, and subreddits are actually punished for reducing reposts. Karma is commoditized.

Here the votes still matter, but the algorithm is public and users can and do sort in a variety of ways to discover new and relevant content. There is no single "front-page"

  • It might be a blockade if they were attempting to block arms or other goods to Israel, but they have long since abandoned that pretense.

By international law, a blockade must be enforced by naval ships, and violating vessels must be duly warned before being boarded and redirected. The crew and cargo may be captured or released according to the relevant laws.

They are just launching rockets at any vessel in range.

Even if you somehow consider the Houthis the legitimate government of Yemen (I think maybe Iran and a few others do), that just makes it state terrorism.

  • Me after a night of partying

  • I wonder if there is a list of Joe Rogan guests or an AI summary of the episodes. Also, Snopes covers a lot and won't rot your brain.

  • Hard to argue that this is really a blockade. Maybe in the broadest sense. It's a violent rebel group attacking civilians in hopes of punishing political rivals with no other clear objective. That's basically the definition of terrorism.

  • For political content, be aware of the instance you are posting in. Lemmy.world is pretty good, but will often remove any posts about political violence, including guillotines and "Luigi" content. Lemmy.ml will remove content that is critical of communism, including Russia and CCP.

  • My recent study explored the environmental impact of lengthening email signatures, focusing specifically on two types of information: gender pronouns and land acknowledgements because both are relatively new additions to email signatures.

    Uh huh.

  • I accidentally replied with my Social Security number. What kind of luck will that bring?

  • Someone forgot the first half of the bread and circuses equation.

  • Do you know how badly students are doing now under the Trump administration?? No? Well, neither do I. Trump fired everyone who knows.

  • Understandable, although it is difficult and time-consuming to moderate such links, and nearly impossible if they are allowed outright. In this case, there was already significant discussion before it was identified (as well as other factors), so I made a judgement call to permit the rule violation. This is a user who should know better.

You may be interested in using the tesseract lemmy client, which provides a smart linkbox on every post which includes archive links, etc.

  • Excuse me, I have a face. It is clearly a lemming astronaut holding up a peace sign. * huffs off stomping in my space boots *

  • Mod:

Please link directly to articles, and provide archive links in the body or comments. I'm not locking or removing this at this time, but please take note in the future.

  • Better than the search paying to use you.
