  • Those that even remotely consider scraping data on Mastodon consistently face intense harassment and criticism.

  • Lemmy.world admins, I am truly asking you to please reflect on how bad this looks. It honestly makes you seem like you can't handle criticism and if people get that vibe they will use it to absolutely fuck with you. I know from my own personal experience. I understand that you're volunteers but this is a step in a very bad direction that will only serve to cause more issues.

  • The "ight I'm out" ban note was.... hm. Not a great look. Comes across as petty and vindictive.

  • Thank you. It is appreciated.

  • Please make announcements on lemmy instead of exclusively on discord moving forward. That is the biggest issue here, the lack of public transparency. Such a decision affects all instances, not just lemmy.world and making it publicly known is important

  • Isn't this literally pretty much the plot to the second book of the handmaids tale or am I losing it. Would make sense, hypocrisy is a big thing amongst the far right I guess

  • If that is true in any way whatsoever, that is a completely moronic long term goal. Lemmy devs themselves have encouraged instances who do such a thing to defederate. I don't see how realistically advertising or monetization would be done not only without immense privacy concerns that would likely affect the rest of the fediverse but without major protests and mass defederation. The backlash against it would be immense, not just on lemmy but across the fediverse itself.

  • Oh no, I do think it's a huge threat. The fediverse in its entirety is horrifying to so many large companies. That's why facebook is desperate to try and step into the fediverse and is getting more and more pissed off as people are going "nuh uh!"

Mastodon is good, but lemmy does have the most potential out of most fediverse projects to become truly really really big if done right. It's like activitypub was made for this kind of platform. Having to just pull entire communities rather than specific users is a big step up from mastodon and reduces the complexity that bars a lot of people from joining mastodon

  • I think you underestimate just how bored people can be and how just innately some people are driven to just start shit for seemingly no reason. If there's a good thing and a new idea to spring up, there's always at least one person to try and wreck it for everyone.

Granted though, if Reddit is paying someone to basically cause chaos here in some way it's honestly kind of appreciated. Thank you kind strangers for stress testing the platform and making it more robust and encouraging other instance admins to coordinate with one another.

  • When I realized it was that dude who tried signing up to my instance I lost my shit laughing, if he was screened prior it's obvious he wouldn't have gotten in. This is precisely what happens when you focus on growth over organically cultivating a healthy community.

  • Here's the announcement for anyone who wants to see I guess

  • yall, this dude tried signing up to my instance a few nights ago. yall wanna see why many communities have registration approvals? see below. warning for nsfw language

  • The issue people are having is the announcement was made exclusively in lemmy.worlds discord server. Beehaw has a discord server as well, but they relay announcements to there, not from there usually

  • It’s also likely to get into legal issue. I like sdf but the fact they aren’t defederating from the pedophile instance is really really bad.

  • Its so weird how aggressive people are against lemmy. People don’t want this entire platform to exist, not just lemmy.world. Like lemmynsfw has had people try to suspend pretty much all their payment processors and hosts repeatedly
