  • And just because a laptop has a trackpad doesn't mean people don't use them with their laptops. Our office is 90% Macbook pro and of those users only 10% use a trackpad (the external bluetooth one at that, not even the built in one)

As of 2024, Apple sells just one computer with a mouse included

Apple sells 0 mice with 90% of their computers, the iMac is the only model that comes with any external peripherals besides a charger. The Mac mini has always been a "bring your own keyboard and mouse" type device, and the Mac Pro/Studio are for people who probably already have a keyboard and mouse.

  • That's what I find really funny about this. Advertising supposedly has been using extremely attractive people for years because attractive people makes you want to buy the product more? But now they're using less attractive people which would mean the advertising is less effective?

I don't really care either way since I hate ads too, but it seems counter productive other than to appeal to the "look we're hip too" corpos.

  • Pros: you might find something you like more.

Cons: You've spent a bunch of time installing OSes you might not like, and you have to set everything back up again. Also if you didn't back up your data you're probably going to delete it.

Do you value time fucking around with your computer, or are you happy with how it works currently?

Also distro hop in a VM first, you're probably not going to like most other things, or it might not be worth the time to migrate all your shit over to it if you find something you like more.

  • It's like gas prices early in the pandemic, but not quite as bad.

They grossly overproduced, sat on a stockpile that couldn't sell which costs them a ton and had to sell them for nothing. There's nowhere for the price to go but up.

  • don’t you have a life out of work?

Yes. I don't spend 80 hours a week on overtime it's like 5 or 6 a week, maybe a bit more of I'm doing work in between down time doing other stuff.

why aren’t you somebody very easy to manipulate?

I don't know exactly what you're trying to say with that. Are you trying to say I'm being manipulated into working overtime? You could argue that to a degree, but I only do it when I feel like doing it, or there's shit to be done. I get paid bonuses for meeting goals so I mostly work extra to make sure we hit those goals and get phat paychecks. It also gives me time to fuck around during the day when I'm bored and just want to fuck off.

  • in what fantasy land do you live where jobs are supposed to make you happy?

It's not a fantasy, it's my current job right now.

Why don’t you do it for free?

You could argue I do with all the overtime I do. Granted that overtime leads to getting more raises so I don't know if that qualifies.

Is your job your whole identity?

The opposite, I made my hobbies my job. I love fucking around with computers so I got a job fucking around with computers.

Find a job you love, and find a job filled with people who will love you back. It's not easy, but it's not impossible either. You may need to move, you may need to go back to school. And worst of all, you may need to schmooze. Nepotism and cronyism gets jobs. Having a large network of people you associate with, and know what you want is probably the biggest key to getting the job of your dream.

  • to make our passions profitable

And that's the key. Not all passions are profitable. If people only did jobs to make money and hated it the entire time we'd have 0 teachers here in the US since we don't pay them for shit. But we have teacher who love their job and are fine making less money because the joy of teaching kids makes up for it. It's a balance of enjoyment and money. Unless you're lucky and just really like something that pays a fuck ton.

  • I have observed that people are eager to help you if you give them attention.

People that like you are more likely to help you. If you tell them to fuck off they're not going to like you, and they're not going to help you. And they make just make your life worse depending on how much of an ass you are. They're probably trying to talk to you because they see you (presumably) looking miserable and want to be nice.

It’s a means to an end.

If that's your only view of jobs you'll probably never find one that will make you happy. Have you considered finding a different job that you'd actually enjoy? You're much more likely to enjoy talking to your co workers when you're surrounded by likeminded people.

  • Features like this really do require a subscription model. This isn’t enabling remote start by pressing a key on your fob. This is sending a request to a server, which connects to a cell tower to broadcast signal saying “turn on this car”. That stuff ain’t free. Someone has to pay AT&T for the data connection.

What BMW was (is?) doing is abhorrent. You’re buying a car with heated seats, and you have to subscribe to hit the button.

  • 5 hours watching a video is not that unreasonable for a machine of that age, especially since it's Intel.

    https://www.pcmag.com/reviews/lenovo-thinkpad-t490#:~:text=Video%20Playback%20Battery%20Rundown%20Test

According to this review they got 10 hours with wifi off, playing a 720p video that was stored locally on the machine. Youtube is going to have plenty of background tasks going on, wifi is going to be active downloading things, and you've probably got more than just youtube in the background so I would consider 5 hours to be expected without really delving deep into power saving (and probably killing performance).

  • I found out one of my 22-y-o coworkers, with no accident history or the like, pays as much quarterly as I do annually for car insurance.

They're also 22. Are they also male? I'm on insurance with my mom (a 50 year old woman) and even then when I hit 25 my insurance dropped like 15%. Insurance has always been expensive as hell for men, women don't get quite as screwed.
