And bumping up the RAM for caching makes a HUGE difference in performance on a RAM starved system. Going from 16 to 32 gigs almost doubled my read write performance for anything other than tiny files here and there. And overall I/O latency tanked.
What software are you planning on running? The N100 is a pretty stout chip for my router. Not all file systems need insane amounts of ram like ZFS
That said you may want a full sized pcie slot depending on what hard drives you're running. At work our raid controllers are gimped by their PCIe interface. Even with regular ass hard drives they will out pace pcie 2.0@x1 speeds since most cheap HBAs are PCIe 2 or maybe 3.
I don't know if I'd even say that about tech as a hole. Mostly just Linux and FOSS. Anything involving Windows or Mac is met with blind fanboyism most of the time.
I wish I could find it now. But there was someone who ran a blog and they were talking about how focusing on analytics was ruining their motivation and fun. Eventually they ended up removing analytics entirely and only periodically check logs from their web server to make sure it's not broken broken. And ultimately they just did it for the fun of it. Whether people looked at it or not wasn't a concern.
What system do you have? Laptop or desktop, if laptop which one, if desktop which mobo do you have? Check your bios for any sleep options, specifically S0 vs S3 standby.
S0 standby vs S3 standby can change things a lot. If you're in S3 standby then it's up to your bios/firmware to handle waking from sleep. If you're in S0 standby then your OS is in control.
Yeah that part confuses me too. It’s a NAS. Install something simple and whatever services you need and I can’t imagine it breaking any time soon. Shit as long as someone else has tested the software I’d be more than happy to install something complex… Which I have and has been running for almost 10 years now with no issues. FreeNAS has been rock solid for me and it sure as hell ain’t minimal.
Why haven't you? Same thing applies for everyone else.
If you had the skill to make an actually useful modern computer you probably work somewhere like that as your job, and you sure as shit don't want to do that at home too. Especially since you'd probably never make any of your monetary investment back, let alone paying for your time.
That’s what confuses me. There are absolutely ads, it’s just fake installed apps. But amount of ads are exactly the same as windows 10. They’re in all the same places, same types (mostly the start menu). Shit you could say 10 has more since that awful edge desktop widget doesn’t exist by default on 11 as far as I’m aware.
Do people just have such deeply debloated windows 10 installs that they’ve forgotten what windows 10 is actually like? Maybe it’s because it’s been 1.5 years without a major update that reinstalls all the garbage automatically?
I haven’t tried it on 13 yet. I haven’t done a single software update on my pixel 4 for that very reason. All of the newer devices I’ve used aren’t rooted.
Backups. I have apps that I specifically won't update for X reasons, and I have titanium backup to manage the backups. If I didn't need root to manage backing up and restoring individual apps then I'd only have one or two more use for root.
The fruit one does seem odd, but the next result? Yeah I could understand being on a short leash after that. Also OP just posts some really weird shit.
You run the risk of getting your ass fired. It's not your property, you're not supposed to mess with it, let alone installing additional hardware and another OS which could then lead to issues with the work side of things.
