  • The themed icons are even worse

Over time I hate themed icons more and more. In like 2013 when I still used Android as my main phone I used to use them. But shortly after that I realized any customization I do myself is just... hideous? And ever since then I've hated all of it.

iOS recently added tinted and "dark" icons and they're all horrendous.

  • If you only have one M.2 slot then M.2 to USB adapters are stupid cheap and infinitely useful as a fast AF flash drive.

If your drive is sata then those are also cheap and the same applies, just not quite as fast.

  • CPU: intel 7th gen or earlier.

I doubt companies will be flooding markets with anything. 7th gen devices came out almost a decade ago (yes it's almost been that long since 2016) and most companies only keep computers for 3-5 years max.

  • Zfs through trunas will let you do raid 1, then jbod more raid 1s as you add more drives. That’s how I’ve gradually gone from 2 12TB, to 14TBs, the. Finally up to 20TBs without any hassle. I’m sure other software raids will do the same.

  • My reflection on that period would lead me to suggest it was the mass “normie” invasion of nerd-space and the promotion of low-effort participation. I don’t remember anything specific about that particular timeframe, though.

So ultimately the sentiment has never changed?

  • Needs some hysteresis. Something most custom fan speed curves lack is a hysteresis option. Basically for short loads don't ramp the fans up to full blast just because the CPU got hot for 0.5 seconds. Liquid coolers aren't immune to this either. If the pump speed is low then it has to start ramping up. And pump noise equally drives me insane.

Like OP said Noctua fans are basically magic. I have mine set with a very not aggressive curve and hysteresis so I rarely notice them ramp up and down.

  • If they had said it was a managed device, I never would have accepted it.

Did you really expect them to just give you a 100% free tablet out of the goodness of their hearts no strings attached? If a company gives you a device without any management then they have incompetent IT staff.

  • Listen, do not judge

The first thing to do if someone expresses uncertainty about vaccines to you, say researchers, is not to judge or dismiss them.

What your suggesting only further alienates them, and lets them live in their echo chamber.

  • I don’t care as long as they’re not glued in.

Outside of the ultra thin devices they’re typically just held in with a couple screws. And most laptops aren’t glued shut either so it’s easy to replace them.

Lenovo briefly had a stint offering laptops with a built in battery and an external one so you could hot swap them. But outside of that I think they’re pointless and I’d much rather one internal bigger battery.

  • Thank god. Whoever decided that "smart battery charging" should only ever be automatic, and can't be hard capped should be quartered. Thank god more companies are finally giving people the option. Especially since it apparently goes all the way down to 70%. This might be what gets me to finally retire this poor phone.

  • Does the phone have a built in battery charge limiter or do you need to root for that? I leave my phone plugged in all day/night running stuff and I really don't need it at 100% 24/7. I think that's the only thing I need root for at this point. Nothing else I want to run needs it anymore after android 13 finally added the ability to toggle airplane mode on and off WITHOUT root.
