I was being literal. A polar bear can't find out what's going on in Antarctica, nor does it have the mental capacity to think about the environmental systems that affect its well-being. All it can do is get hungry and starve. :(

The planet is not, in fact, dying. A lot of species that humans care about are dying. The bedbugs and termites and rats are doing fine; it's the corals and butterflies and emperor penguins that are having trouble.

(This is an important distinction because of the existence of human extinctionists: those who think that humans should kill ourselves off so that life can prosper in our absence. Thing is, only humans care about what's going on in a different continent from our own. A polar bear does not care what happens to penguins.)

We can't have a world where the only political issue is "Which psychotic fascists are worse than the others?" But avoiding that requires recognizing that Netanyahu and Hamas are both psychotic fascists who willingly throw "their people's" lives away in pursuit of power and image.

Hamas keeps Palestinians imprisoned and deprived to use them as human shields to make Israel look bad. They steal food and fuel, maintaining Palestinians in a state of deprivation in order to point to them and say "Look what Jews did!" They burrow terrorist headquarters under homes and hospitals so that there's no way to stop the terrorism without causing massive collateral damage, so Hamas can say "Look what Jews did!"

Netanyahu explicitly permitted Hamas's attack on October 7, allowing Israelis to be raped, tortured, and killed because it would make Palestinians look bad. He lets Hamas do horrible things because it lets him say "Look what Palestinians did!" He promotes illegal settlements in the West Bank to create conflict so that he can say "Look what Palestinians did!"

They've both gotta go. There is no peace without taking all the fascists and putting them into a very small box where they can only harm each other.

It's not so much customs or religion at this point, just as the Troubles in Ireland weren't really about religious belief. Rather, the religious identities mark distinct social groups, which have a history of discrimination, oppression, and terror against one another.

It's not "You don't believe in my God so I have to kill you" so much as "Your daddy killed my daddy, so my uncle killed your uncle, so now you and I have to try to kill each other too."
