  • No, they're saying if things go wrong the managers do fix it, but it's a lot easier to plan coverage yourself. This person clearly isn't working a taco bell.

Contrast everything about their post to, for example https://lemm.ee/comment/17126938

  • I would default to assuming that this is a professional job, so making sure you're covered in case something goes wrong is expected and also reasonable to expect from coworkers. If there's conflicts (I don't think I can support this while you're gone because I'm gonna be too busy with x), you go to your manager and ask them to figure it out. But by default, it's likely you know who is best equipped to support because they are already working with you.

  • The person you're responding to is trying really hard to get you to understand that your story makes no sense in the context of this thread. As written, it sounds like she asked for time off and was denied. In fact, as you've said, she went awol and asked for forgiveness...which she did not get. That isn't the point of this thread, which makes the very similar story confusing to seemingly everyone.

  • Lol thattts a very different story now. "I decided not to show up, I'm on vacation for a week as of today without notice" is a shit move and not just to the employer. "I'm on an airplane cause grandma died", or "I'm in the hospital" -- nothing wrong. "I decided to go to Tijuana see you bitches in a week" -- I honestly don't blame them for firing her.

This is not the implication of the op

  • No, it's saying they don't understand what you want them to understand and they need help in a concrete way, but this issue doesn't actually impact them except in the form of threads like this, so they sure aren't gonna go research it themselves because that's generally how humans work. I think I captured that right.

Or perhaps, instead of treating people who are broadly on your side like dumb children who simply aren't trying to meet you half way, acknowledge that you need a different framework for communication with them. Or don't.

The other poster probably meant something along those lines

  • Yes, I agree, gender discussions are exhausting

Also I think the right side has to have a little ruler in his hand to smack the child for getting wrong what they don't understand. Maybe a rolled up newspaper with this meme printed on it. Very meta.

  • Again the question isn't if people are nervous in interviews. Pretty much any human who has ever held a job knows this. My comment is that at least to me this screams coping mechanism I have difficulty believing they aren't anxious about a looot of other things in life. And they can get help.

  • I suppose so, but if someone is that anxious about an interview I feel like they probably need help more generally. If we really believe this is the only time they need to have a coping mechanism for their anxiety then I'd agree with you

  • I'll break the flow of shitting on Elon (a hobby of mine, but it gets old) and say yes, we have a large number of engineers. Yes, a lot of them suck real hard. Good ones are often promoted to the level of their incompetence, others are just well-polished incompetents who know how to talk the talk. So...yes, there is a shortage. However adding more to the pool won't fix the bad hiring and promotion practices in the industry.

Also, doesn't really matter if there's a bunch in the Midwest if you can't convince any of your existing staff to uproot to some racist pro-trump place with extreme temperatures (assuming you want some level of in person interaction). Texas is only palatable because the place they're moving is Austin which is....not quite as racist. And tech bros have never had a reputation for being pro women which of course Texas is not.

  • You hate immigrants because you're a racist

They hate H1B immigration because it allows people like Elon to freely set up sweatshops of smart immigrants who have built a home in this country and now have their chance to keep living in that home tied to the random whims of a billionaire.

    Not the same.

The H1B system in concept is great but it's ripe for abuse by men like Elon. One I'm aware of is that paperwork is way behind on the gov side and it's kind of a lottery (will our coworker be here in the fall? Let's spin the wheel!). Another is that larger companies can from what I understand put in a request for many more spots than they need and since it's a lottery be fairly confident they'll get the spots they really wanted, while small companies have to suffer at the whims of chance. And I'm no expert on this but I'd say another key area that sucks is its just a bizarre design by committee system. As Americans we want to steal other countries best and brightest and H1B is like a DMV version of that goal.
