  • Isn't this comparable to utilities you buy for smoking weed (talking about countries where it is still illegal) like a bong or a special grinder? They are only really used for doing something illegal but it is still legal to buy them.

  • Oof, I only read a third of the article until the authors starts talking about tech clusters in detail. But it seems so weird to me how so many economically focused people seem to have a very strong tunnel vision and see the world only in terms of economic growth and nothing else. Like, in the whole introduction there is no mention at all of the environment and how we have already more than surpassed its limits in many ways. How the global north's growth heavily relies on exploiting the people and the environment of the global south. Of course there was a lot more economic growth in Europe and the US when they could depend on colonialism and slavery. What I want to say is that, while the proposed question might be interesting, not even considering these factors is a huge oversight. I don't get how these fans of capitalism can understand so little of how it works. Like those economy "experts" who have been praising neoliberalism as benefitting everyone for ages but have made most people's lives miserable.

  • If you're searching for a cyberpunk game with good story, I can highly recommend Cloudpunk!

  • I guess it is not much different than people calling women "hysteric" if they dared to complain about how they were treated. Or people calling me "too extreme/radical" when I went vegan over a decade ago. It's just so lazy of them. As you said, because they see themselves as the default they don't even have to use their brain before dismissing any perspective different from their own. It is so frustrating the power people have when they are in this default position. Any arguments you give them are just repelled by their ignorance.

And the thing is, I actually would like to live in a world where everyone can be happy and live freely, not only a select few. But I guess the logic of privileged people is that we have to be like them and that we, if we one day get to power, would like to oppress them just as they oppress us now (I think there is a video by F.D. Signifier where he explains this in more detail).

  • Hm, I agree with the author in how far too much anti-wokeness can repel voters. But I have to disagree with the overall analysis of wokeness by the author. They make it seem like wokeness is this policing of others based on "niche concerns", not only for conservative politicians but also for the author themselves*. Imo this sounds like someone complaining about SJWs and saying how petty fights people put on when they are in fact criticizing racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. Are these niche concerns? No, obviously this is about how we structure society itself and about power struggles in it. It is obviously annyoing when big corporations use pinkwashing etc to sell more, but the same is true for climate change. I wouldn't call climate change a niche concern either, just because many corporations and individuals try to use our concern for their own benefit.

And regarding the policing: this isn't anything new. Cis-heteronormativity has existed for a few hundreds of years in western societies. As a queer trans woman I'm policed in the streets everyday by all kinds of people. If people now feel attacked when they cannot behave as misogynistic, racist, ableist, etc as before, well then this shows the slow shift of who has power in society. Many cishet men are frightened by the prospect of a more egalitarian society because that would mean losing power over people.

I get how the author could try to speak from the perspective of a potential trump/desantis voter and would therefore frame wokeness in such a way. My point here is, however, that the author clearly argues that even for themselves the ideals behind wokeness are wrong and unimportant.

  • I've never heard of Bill Hicks... So are they trolling or not? Still cannot say. Seeing it as trolling seemed a more favorable interpretation of their tangled word salad.

  • Oh OK, so you're trolling, right? I thought that kind of behavior was not welcome on beehaw?

  • What a load of bs. Seeing patterns in just about everything is a human condition not proving any causality whatsoever...

  • Hail Seitan! --> many vegans (including myself) swear on pure gluten :D

And yes, I also know people who also cannot be vegan because of all their dietary restrictions.

I guess the similarity of arch users and vegans lies in the fact that both groups are very much outside the norm. So you often have to distance yourself from the assumed default (windows/apple computer, omnivore diet). And just talking with other people, it comes up often by itself. If someone asks me to fix their windows PC, I have to tell them that I haven't really used windows for nearly a decade now. And if someone invites me over or to a restaurant, I have to tell them that I'm vegan. But people who are inside the norm often don't deal very well with outsiders, so they have to invent tropes like the annoying vegan. What is actually annoying them is their own double standard they have to live with (torturing/killing animals and having a large ecological impact vs wanting to be a good human being).

But obviously there are also some people who use arch or are vegan and do it to provoke a reaction, to feel special and morally superior.

  • Second that. It is a bit of a hassle to get all the games and to access them on the deck, but once you set that up, it runs great and you also are much less limited :)

  • Well, obviously by living in the UK or a European country you benefit from (neo)colonialism and capitalism quite a lot. People here do have a certain responsibility, although more so in making their government and the involved economy take responsibility for their actions. It certainly is a strange position to be in, because you cannot really live ethically under capitalism. But we should still strive to change this, to abolish capitalism and to make the world a better place for everyone to live in. Just seeing that the world is unfair and continuing to exploit people for your own good is imo unethical.

Btw occupation is definitely not only based on military force but more often than not by capitalist exploitation. And occupation doesn't work in a way where you have one distinct group of people conquering some land or people. It rather is the combination of administrative and economic power, i.e. various companies exerting pressure, to maintain control over a people. So yes, if a company is benefitting from the capitalist exploitation of these people and is therefore continuing this exploitation, I would think they are in part responsible for the situation. And it would be unethical to support this domain with your money. Of course, it is a question of degree, because it certainly isn't as bad as directly giving the Taliban money but worse than giving the money to a less problematic country.

It is a bit like paying ExxonMobil, Coca-Cola or Nestlé for a hypothetical service. Do you really want to support them? If you have a choice, use something else. If you don't have a choice, protest against not having it.

  • As I understand it, this isn't a resolved conflict in the past but rather an ongoing one. So yes, it does matter if you decide to give an oppressive British company or the Taliban money. And apart from that, as a German, I'm very much aware that we are not responsible for the wrongdoings of our ancestors but are responsible not to forget and thus repeat them. People who were victims under colonialism or any other form of oppression deserve at least recognition and compensation. Just continuing to live with the current condition shaped by oppression means supporting the oppression.

  • I think they just gave an example for how podcasts often feel to them. And I can relate, most podcasts feel like the podcaster assumes a certain norm and presenting topics as absolute truths. Someone here mentioned darknet diaries for example and I tried listening to this podcast but was deterred by his assumptions of how everyone wants to accumulate money and how he is obviously very oblivious of his political bias (i.e. trying to be apolitical but thus supporting a government's military and political decisions). I guess this problem of thinking one is apolitical while actually talking about highly political stuff is more prevalent in cis male dominated spaces like tech (imo because of the combination of less empathy, a more self-centered viewpoint and a confidence in one's own correctness). But as given per example by the other commenter, societal norms at large give people the feeling that they are correct in their views and that things just are a certain way (e.g. sex differences, certain experiences etc). Well, just wanted to give my mustard to it ;)

  • Just FYI, yt-dlp does work with other sites, too. So you can get some pretty decent quality by downloading from bandcamp for example. But not all that what your asking for unfortunately...

  • Interesting video. Although I strongly disagree with him on why "mastodon diehards" don't want to federate with meta "because they just don't like the company". He mentioned it himself in the video that big companies like Google, Meta, Microsoft, etc actually adopt a certain protocol just to make it obsolete and destroy the competition. This is a real threat with many previous examples to draw from. Why would he frame it as if only some mastodon nerds want to block meta because of some silly reason? This is misleading at best.

He also fails to make the connection that the example of the 90ies would just repeat if big companies adopt the new protocol. Someone develops a new protocol to escape the walled garden(s), big companies come in and erect a new walled garden. What about this is any good if we cannot keep it open for everyone and away from corporal greed leading to enshittification?

Statements like these make me be very wary with this channel. He is pretty oblivious and naive of capitalism.

(And also interesting to see that Abigail Thorn doesn't want tumblr to join the fediverse)

  • Probably related to this:

It's really frustrating to see (young) cis men continuously fall into the trap of patriarchy, making their own life worse but especially making it for everyone else hell...
