  • Ianal, but I think they have a responsibility to at least let the defendant know about their options. Other than that, they can have a strategy or suggest the defendant accept the less good options.

Sounds like this guy realized that their "help" wasn't in his own interest.

  • Ultimately, it's because we let them get away with a literal civil war. Here in 2023, almost every protection put in place after the civil war has eroded to nothingness, and they/their ancestors weren't held accountable, and have been allowed to lie a false narrative into being for almost two centuries.

They've told us they still view this as a civil war. I wonder when enough normal people will believe them.

  • Mainstream "normal" republicans won't actually not vote republican. They know that their only hope of maintaining some power is to continue to work with the batshit crazy regressives.

They got in bed with these people via the Southern Strategy, and they've only recently started making noises like they're uncomfortable. Once they're in the booth, though, they will still vote straight ticket.

  • It's actually an easy explanation.

People were more concerned with a Democrat being likeable, after decades of character assassination, while they didn't care that the republican was a criminal, and also foreign interference and an FBI that was paralyzed by biased agents and management fear of appearing biased, actual outcomes be damned.

It was a perfect storm of regressive misinformation and every individual with the ability to stop the train wreck trying to cover their own asses and pass the buck instead.

  • This. I can't solve this, and neither can any other individual person.

It will take a wide spread implosion, but they've got a resilient ecosystem that will just switch messianic figures out once Trump is no longer able to hold public sway.

  • I think it's safe to assume that OP is venting frustration.

But you know what? If you used this kind of energy to attack the monied interstate that are bleeding is all dry, instead of the frustrated not to no normal person who doesn't want to keep paying someone else's inflated mortgage, maybe things would get better.

  • Because they don't see the racist, slave-holding south as a past entity separate from their current reality.

If the federal government weren't stopping them, they'd re-enslave people today. In fact, they have via the prison system. So they don't want anyone closely examining it, hence banning or slowing the subject in schools if they're able.

  • This is a sign that they truly believe it's "the magic word."

I think that's the attitude. Please should mean something. Thank you should mean something. But when you grew up being told to say it just to get what you want, then that's all it means to you.

  • Blue light only matters in a specific, narrow range. Most cheap commercial blue lights do not filter this part of the range, so they lie and say some unverifiable stuff about "eye strain" which itself is an unverifiable condition that people can work themselves into a tizzy over.

Remember being told low light would cause eye strain? Not real. Looking at stuff too close can cause some fatigue, which is managed by looking at something 20 feet away to get your eyes to flex. It has nothing to do with light hue or quality.

  • Notable exception of the Rosenbergs, for whom new info has come out over the last few rounds of declassification.

Julius was almost definitely guilty, but Ethel very likely had no idea. The government went ahead and convicted and killed her anyway to protect the methods and sources of how they caught Julius.

Fun fact, that trial was prosecuted by Roy Cohen, long time mentor to Donald Trump. But when Roy went into the hospital to die from complications with AIDS, Trump abandoned him without a second glance.

  • This assumes all other things are equal.

Elon musk and Donald Trump and others are not stupid. They may act stupid. Their brains may be psychologically damaged by the distance their money allows them to put between themselves, others, and the consequences of their actions.

But they are not stupid. If they were stupid, their stupidity would sometimes bite them in the ass in a way that actually has consequences for them. Since that does not happen, we can be relatively certain that their actions are going according to plan...their plan? Maybe. Or their accountant's plan. But until a mistake costs them actual money that they cannot recoup through tax shenanigans, I find it hard to accept that they aren't just evil.

  • This. He's on the hook for a relatively small percent of his personal wealth. He has a ton of government contracts, which equate to cash flow. To insulate that cash flow, he needs a loss. He can get that loss by destroying the value of Twitter, which he also artificially inflated by making an insane offer in the first place.

The thing that folks don't get is that money is different when you have none, some, and a ton. When you have none, you are effectively living moment to moment - when youre out, you spend what you have on your immediate needs, and make it work the rest of the time.

When you have some, which is most of us, you may live paycheck to paycheck, but you can still plan two weeks at a time and may have some long term plans.

Elon musk and others in his bracket could literally burn 99% of their wealth and still have more money than almost anyone else. This level of rich is marked by planning years in advance, and having contingency plans to take advantage of set backs. For example, a market crash for most of us means we lose wealth and still probably never recover it. But for Elon musk, a market crash is just a fire sale on stock. He can sell at a loss for tax benefit, or he can buy up stuff at step discounts. The benefit of wealth is that ever situation can make you more money.
