  • There are even more versions:

    Colombia
    Columbia
    Colón
    Colombo
    Columbus
    Colomb
    Colom

Places were usually named by settlers according to the rules of their own language. Columbus is the Latin variant, Colón is Spanish, Colombo Italian.

Back in 15th-16th century translating personal names was common. The practice is still continues with monarchs today, see popes - John Paul ll was also Iohannes Paulus, Juan Pablo, Ivan Pavao ...

  • PhD overproduction (and subsequently devaluation) is a real thing. The intention of PhDs was to reward and recognize major original contributions to a specific field of science. It turned into another academic "level" that you have to grind towards by producing a large quantity of articles. Even before AI the academic slop was a real thing.

  • Sound like a standard case of misaligned incentives in a planned economy. As far as those go this is quite benign.

Central government sets targets for selling cars domestically, so of course every car is going to be sold domestically. Even those sold internationally.

  • Part of it makes sense. We live longer and longer, retirement age is something that needs to be adjusted with the human lifespan.

The problem is that our idea of what "work" should be is so awful that people look forward to retiring, and logically complain if they are denied the opportunity.

  • I've seen claims both ways, and it's too much debate about semantics.

Those facilities are damaged enough to be useless in the short term (few months at least). In the long term Iran can build new facilities regardless if these ones are completely destroyed or merely damaged.

  • Anecdotal evidence but on my limited sample of male and female friends and acquaintances whose homes I visited, it doesn't matter. People range from obsessively clean to very messy, but I didn't notice a correlation.

  • The headline is somewhat misleading. Iran said US personnel are legitimate targets (meaning those employed by the US government. Not all US citizens.

Although if I were American I would not risk depending on the judgment of a random Iranian soldier.

  • As someone who went poverty -> comfortable -> not so well off, I can confirm. It was (mentally) easier to get up from the bottom than to deal with the loss and try to do it all over again and risk even further loss.

As the old curse says - May you have and then not have.

  • But read, learn, understand what?

Why they feel the need to be separate. What exactly are they afraid of. You're focusing too much on being "technically correct". Human emotions don't work like that.

    Humans work generally like this:

    • we have a bad experience
    • we try to avoid bad experience repeating

Sometimes it leads into coping mechanisms like needing a safe space. Trying to break down that barrier by force will not work, it will only make it stronger. You can hope to be invited in, but that requires understanding.

  • I feel like a Cassandra since I was warning about this for years now.

The gender equality narrative got too focused on excluding men specifically, instead of including the less represented gender in each profession. Somehow the idea was that men are privileged in the system and women oppressed, while the truth is that both men and women are oppressed.

Divide and conquer was a small step away from that point.

  • Let me try to phrase my opinion:

It's unfortunate that gender-exclusive communities exist, but it's a consequence of deeper societal issues.

Forcing the issue on social networks like Lemmy will actually make it worse, because those groups will feel in danger and want to separate even further.

Being able to access the community in read-only mode is a very good thing, because you'll be able to gain insight into why they feel the need for a separate space. Read, learn and understand, even if you disagree.
