  • Idk who you talked to, but I think most European beer enthusiasts would agree that a lot of American beers are awesome. Especially what you mentioned: various IPAs and Stouts, you guys started the modern interpretation of those styles.

Maybe someone who thinks only lagers are legit beer and everything else is "hipster crap". I've met some people with those opinions.

  • M23 won the battle in the end, shows you can just walk around fortified positions if you have a high enough noncredibility rating.

Rwanda/Congo wars are always extremely noncredible. M23 leader has announced their main goal is marching on Kinshasa. It's about ~1.500km away on the other side of Africa. With what logistics? But I don't think it will stop them from trying (and maybe even succeeding)

  • Arguing semantics is not arguing in good faith.

In this "purely theoretical" case, exhaustion plays a huge role. There would not be a lack of volunteers in the beginning, say in the first year of war. After a couple of years and no hope of victory, it's not surprising some people could decide to give up.

Now, should they be forced into war anyway? Tragedy of the commons or some such philosophical dilemma....

  • Mandatory training - Yes
    Mandatory service - No

In the event of a real defensive war, where your nation is invaded with the intent of conquest or subjugation, you will not have a lack of volunteers. You will have a lack of trained people.

It takes a couple of months to train a new recruit. Having everyone ready to go will help tremendously during the initial stages of war.

On the other hand, a permanent mandatory service is 1. A waste of money, 2. Open for exploitation by corrupt governments

  • The choice of profession is not made completely independently. You see what other people are doing - friends, relatives, random people in the street (including all other taxi drivers you've ever met). And you choose a place for yourself guided by these preexisting ideas about where you could best fit in.

Humans tend to repeat the patterns of behavior they see other people do.

  • Welcome!

For a while now Linux has been better at most personal computing things except gaming. And for server uses an even longer time.

There are some specific hardware/software situations where you'll need Windows but it's unlikely to happen at home. Unless you have very peculiar hobbies.

  • So what you're saying is that Virginia could have public transport on the level of Switzerland. I imagine it would even be cheaper since Virginia is much less mountainous.

Edit: even economically they are not radically different
Virginia: GDP $759.2B, per capita $86,747
Switzerland: GDP $942.2B, per capita $106,097

  • The only issue I see with your plan is keeping the Chinese writing system. Alphabets are superior, even if you write Chinese with them.

Otherwise as long as my ideas about how the world should function get put into practice, I don't care who does it. By chance of history US was the one who brought quite a few good ideas into the world, mostly in the second half of the 20th century. But there's nothing fundamentally American about having good ideas.
