  • Yes, but you wouldn't:

    • offer to pay
    • without any stipulations
    • while on TV
    • while in the white house
    • as a person that brags about their wealth
    • for a funeral
    • of a military person
    • in a high profile murder

Any idiot could see that the funeral was going to get out of hand.

If Trump said he'd by me lunch it'd be the most expensive lunch in history.

  • “I think the military will be paying—taking care of it.” Trump replied, “Good. They’ll do a military. That’s good. If you need help, I’ll help you out.” Later, a reporter covering the meeting asked Trump, “Have you offered to do that for other families before?” Trump responded, “I have. I have. Personally. I have to do it personally. I can’t do it through government.” The reporter then asked: “So you’ve written checks to help for other families before this?” Trump turned to the family, still present, and said, “I have, I have, because some families need help … Maybe you don’t need help, from a financial standpoint. I have no idea what—I just think it’s a horrific thing that happened. And if you did need help, I’m going to—I’ll be there to help you.”

There's a lot to unpack here.

  • Yeah that's pretty much my view.

My point though, is that most people conflate "doctor" with "smart person", but that's a false association.

Doctors are just people who studied a lot longer, and that doesn't make them smart, nor more credible in any meaningful way.

  • As someone managing some chronic illness who has interacted with many doctors and specialists in the last several years... it's a mistake to put Drs on some kind of "smart person" pedestal. They're just a profession like any other - some are amazing, some good, most are idiots without much knowledge outside their narrowly defined practice.

If you think of the way you progressed through your tertiary studies, you just do it one exam or assessment at a time. None are particularly "hard" or require amazing IQ or reasoning skills, it's just time and effort.

The main difference between a pharmacist and a GP is that the former is done in 3 years while a GP takes 9. The extra 6 years doesn't make them smarter or better thinkers, they just broaden the things that they know.

Another aspect is that most people can't afford to spend a decade studying or doing placements etcetera.

So yeah, the opinion of a Dr is only helpful in their specific field. Your GP will be great at prescribing antibiotics, but doesn't know anything about diet.

  • The thing that really bugs me is that Trump has told everyone exactly what he's going to do, but no one seems interested.

He's been very clear that he's not going to concede, and that he has legal challenges ready to go. The election isn't going to be won or lost on votes in swing states, but who can provide the most pressure on officials in those setting states.

I have this sinking feeling that he's going to be declared winner through corruption and manipulation, the dems will say "oh well fiddlesticks", and the western world will start matching towards fascism.

As in, Kamala is talking about medical records and Trump is planning insurrection.

Just like the investigation into Russian interference, and all Trumps legal stuff. "Yeah well he's guilty as sin but you know - what are you gonna do".

  • You're dead right that the company isn't worth anything in a traditional sense.

However, the existence of truth social directly contradicts your claim that they don't want an echo chamber.

  • Well, that will decide whether Harris wins from a legitimate perspective, but Trump just isn't going to concede no matter what happens.

They've been wargaming how to foment uncertainty, and if they can find a way to do so in a state which is not a swing state they will do so.

It's very clear that if Trump does not win legitimately, he's going to try to steal victory illigitimately, through manipulation of corrupt officials, through legal proceedings in friendly courts, and through civil unrest if need be. It's exactly what he did in 2020, but with no preparation. This time round they've had 4 years to prep.

  • Yeah. I honestly don't know.

Firstly, fucking vote. Don't get complacent no matter what. Make a plan of how to get to your booth on the big day. A lot of media between now and then will try to make you feel like you don't need to bother.

That said, having consumed a lot of commentary about this, from organisations I think are reasonably balanced, I just have no idea what to expect.

After the big day, it could be an outright shooting civil war, or Kamala could win in a landslide because republicans are too ashamed to vote, or Trump could claim victory and just get away with it. In any of those starkly different outcomes I'd think "well this was a really predictable outcome"

  • Dude. Isn't truth worth billions?

I guess you're mostly right, but the exception is that they need one safe space in which to congratulate each other and wank about NFTs and what not.

  • Isn't the only thing that really matters decentralised control?

Open protocols and APIs seem pretty meaningless to me if there's a single point of control for the brand.

If everyone migrates to bluesky and then bluesky says "of we're not doing that open thing anymore because of this new embiggened thing we're doing" everyone will still be on bluesky.
