  • You realise you're doing absolutely 100% precisely what the Trump campaign would have you do right?

You're literally protesting against your own side.

This election will not be won or lost by a few hapless protestors, but rather by swing voters who are clueless about politics and have no idea what a gazan is. To those voters you're making Trump seem like a beacon of ethics and moral standing.

Go protest outside a Trump rally. I'm sure that will work out well.

  • I think the use of the term "unconditional" is fairly reductive. While any US government may continue military support regardless of Israel's behavior, some governments will be more effective than others in restraining Netanyahu or nesuring Gazan's receive appropriate support.

I feel confident that neither Biden nor Harris are calling Netanyahu and saying "do what you have to do".

  • No she's not.

There's every chance she's going to lose the election to a criminal, fascist, rapist, lying, insurrectionist octogenarian who's only policies are lynching political opponents and tanking the global economy with a tarrif war.

I like Harris immensely and I think she would make a fine president, and maybe go a long way to healing the yawning chasm between progressives and conservatives.

However given the remaining likelihood that she will lose against such an opponent you have to agree that her campaign hasn't really gotten traction.

  • This is my plan.

Similar background. My parents just took the "everything is very bad" angle but it was very obvious that want true in a lot of cases. The result being a lot of risky experimentation with no support or guidance from an adult.

I think the message is, life is about the journey, we're here to experience everything we can and that includes sex, drugs, and rock and roll. The problem is that its very easy to make a mistake that will greatly diminish your experiences later on.

With driving, and sex, a momentary lapse in judgement can irrevocably change the trajectory of your life. Simply being aware of that is hopefully enough to help someone make smart choices?

Drugs and booze can be fun. I enjoyed the full range of experiences in that regard. The best I can do is to try to ensure my kids feel comfortable talking to me about things.

Edit: yeah smoking is a real bitch. I got off that train a year ago thank fuck. IDK how to talk to a kid about something like that. Maybe just let them talk and challenge the misconceptions. The thing that trapped me is that I thought I wouldn't get addicted because it was so awful. It took a lot of effort to get used to it. By then it was too late.

  • This thread has convinced me that LLMs are merely a mild increment in productivity.

The most compelling is that they're good at boilerplate code. IDEs have been improving on that since forever. Although there's a lot of claims in this thread that seem unlikely - gains way beyond even what marketing is claiming.

I work in an email / spreadsheet / report type job. We've always been agile with emerging techs, but LLMs just haven't made a dent.

This might seem offensive, but clients don't pay me to write emails that LLMs could, because anything an LLM could write could be found in a web search. The emails I write are specific to a client's circumstances. There are very few "biolerplate" sentences.

Yes LLMs can be good at updating reports, but we have highly specialised software for generating reports from very carefully considered templates.

I've heard they can be helpful in a "convert this to csv" kind of way, but that's just not a problem I ever encounter. Maybe I'm just used to using spreadsheets to manipulate data so never think to use an LLM.

I've seen low level employees try to use LLMs to help with their emails. It's usually obvious because the emails they write include a lot of extra sentences and often don't directly address the query.

I don't intend this to be offensive, and I suspect that my attitude really just identifies me as a grumpy old man, but I can't really shake the feeling that in email / spreadsheet / report type jobs anyone who can make use of an LLM wasn't or isn't producing much value anyway. This thread has really reinforced that attitude.

It reminds me a lot of block chain tech. 10 years ago it was going to revolutionise data everything. Now there's some niche use cases... "it could be great at recording vehicle transfers if only centralised records had some disadvantages".

  • I couldn't let an AI do any of this for me.

As in... I couldn't let anyone make my emails more professional or whatever.

It's not like I think my emails are always the best and can not be improved upon, it's just that my emails are "me".

I never have cause to write an email in a foreign language.

  • I like to imagine that he has a team of doctors propping him up for each appearance.

Remember he wanted Biden drug tested? Yeah, that's projection.

His Drs carefully manage a cocktail of meds to maintain his virility. Uppers, downers, vitamins, protein, prophylactics, diuretics, the works. The thing is, they thought that with careful management if the dosage they could stave off the inevitable crash until after November 5th, sadly though his 78 year old mind just can't take it and he's falling apart.

That's what I like to imagine anyway.

  • It's this.

I remember walking to the video rental store in the 90s to hire VCR tapes. We always tried to get that ones rated 18+ because there would be some boob stuff. Usually the attendant wouldn't care.

Now, fuck. Filtering porn out of my social media feeds is a daily ordeal.

  • I don't think they really need to.

Laws are often just an acknowledgement of a society's expectation.

"We've all decided that kids under 15 using social isn't great."

The fact that this law exists makes it infinitely b easier for parents to establish and maintain rules in their household, because peer pressure is minimised.

Yes, some kids will still use social before they're 15. Perhaps most kids. However, I think harmfully excessive use will be minimised.

  • That's not really the point though. You're correct in that "there's not much overlap", but it's those few undecided idiots who are going to decide the election.

There are literally people who will cast their ballot based on the vibe they have on the day. They remember a meme their sister posted the day before that said Kamala shat herself one time in highschool and vote for Trump. These people are going to choose the outcome of this election.

I think the best strategy for either party at this time is a plan for some type of release like this each day, every day up to the election. Yes, in each case you're not going to convince any voters who are already aligned behind either party, but it might just be this article that sticks in someone's mind on the big day.
