  • I would explain this in 2 parts.

Firstly, if you get a qualification and work most of your life, don't fuck up by having a kid too early, or having a bad car accident, or getting addicted to something, then you'll have enough money in your life to be comfortable and to care for the people you care about.

Secondly, if you're lucky enough to have wealthy parents you don't have to worry about that.

I also just want to add that I feel you buddy. You've been dealt a tough hand but the fact that you're here asking this indicates that you've got game. It's good to have a step dad with money but it's better to have a dad that worries about what his kid thinks of him.

  • My situation is somewhat different because I'm in Australia. Presently we have a center left government, but they're quite impotent like Biden, and as a society we're sliding to the right like everywhere else.

That said, I'm particularly concerned about the rise of fascist groups. I'm seems their recruits are usually disenfranchised young men. I have no illusion about my ability (or lack thereof) to "reach" members of that segment, but I can certainly support the organisations that can, with both time and money.

  • It's regressive in the sense that poor people spend more of their money on goods and services that include VAT.

It's also "broad based" in that wealthy people spend more money (in total) on things, and the vendors of those things collect the tax.

For example, if a company in Australia sells a $11m private jet to some asshole, that asshole just paid $1m in taxes.

Said asshole may well pay no income tax by virtue of their ability to disappear taxable income through complex business structures.

  • Sorry mate this dumb factoid doesn't withstand even a moment's scrutiny.

If you donate $10 you might save $3 in tax but you lost all $10.

The Gates Foundation might use a few cents from that $10 for fancy dinners for Gates and his wife or whatever but there are auditors to ensure that the money is used for the people they purport to help. Their records are public and I can assure you that if there were any wrong doing whatsoever the internet would be afire with every detail.

  • You know, I used to worry about China taking over the world, but honestly they look like a much better choice for a super power than the US is now.

I for one welcome our new communist overlords.

  • I think with a lot of technologies the first 95% is easy but the last 5% becomes exponentially harder.

With LLMs though I think the problem is conflating them with other forms of intelligence.

They're amazingly good at forming sentences, but they're unable to do real actual work.

  • From what I read it doesn't cover h5n1 but being vaccinated against the other flu variants obviously prevents you getting both h5n1 and some other preventable illness at the same time.

You're dead right though, getting a flu shot is a good way to be prepared.

General preparedness for h5n1 has been in the back of my mind for a while but your comment has motivated me to tick a few things off the list.

I'll order up some masks, sanitiser, and TP.

I had a flu shot a few months ago, but probably due for a covid top up.
