  • There are plenty of useful opensource applications, as evidenced by this thread.

How you make a living isn't really relevant.

My point is, implying that one should be surprised to find that an app is both useful and opensource is a misconception.

  • This is one of those nuanced positions that it appears Lemmy users are incapable of understanding.

It's possible to simultaneously care about climate change and acknowledge that some protests are counter productive.

If you'd said "I don't like to stop at the altar to pray for climate change action on my way to work because it seems pointless" that would've been a statement.

I think the core problem is that the majority of people just don't care. The US just elected a president who will take no action. Protesting isn't going to make people care.

  • I understand that people need money to live, but a lot of the "most useful" software (as in... almost every part of the web) is open source software built by well paid developers.

Your comment might be applicable to an android lemmy client for example, but not to software generally.

  • What agenda could I possibly have regarding your inability to navigate minor every day interactions?

You don't have any God damned facts. You seem to think your Drs receptionist is involved in a conspiracy to manipulate you into refusing treatment and paying a no-show fee.

You should probably get that looked at.

  • Billionaires want to exploit people and places but they don't want to live in an exploited place with exploited people.

As in don't shit where you eat.

Ultimately I think billionaires wanting to spend their billions in NZ is a good thing for NZ.

  • I think it's a "threat" but not a very good one.

There might be 3 brands of toothbrush available to buy in the US but maybe all of them are manufactured in China. If you just tariff everything from China then US consumers will just pay more because there's no incentive for manufacturers to absorb the tariff.

It's a threat to Chinese toothbrush manufacturers because it creates an incentive for other manufacturers to pop up elsewhere, maybe someone will start manufacturing toothbrushes in the US. These toothbrushes would be cheaper than the tariffed ones for consumers to buy, but obviously more expensive than toothbrushes used to be before the tariffs.

In summary, because consumers are unlikely to buy less toothbrushes, they just end up paying more.

  • Sadly, I think you're right.

It's absurd that the wealthiest people in the world are making all the decisions that effect the rest of us, especially when they're using that control to influence the rest of us through social media.

I think the only solution is a revolution where wealth is redistributed, probably through violence.

Bezos and Musks assets should just be nationalised. Give them pensions of 10m a year or something in return.

  • I think you may have just misunderstood the post.

It's not intended to trap the web crawlers indexing content for google search.

It's intended to trap AI training bots harvesting sentences in order to improve their LLMs.

I don't really have an answer as to why those bots don't find your content appealing, but that doesn't mean that Nepenthes doesn't work.
