  • There are so many aspects of Bethesda games that would be changed for the better if they took inspiration from their stablemates, like Arkane or iD. I'm still waiting, though. Nor am I holding my breath.

  • For real. Even just talking to your fellow coding monkeys helps. It's ironic that for example here in France, despite all our workers rights and revolutionary tradition, speaking about your salary is still a social faux-pas. And who benefits? Certainly not us.

  • That's because the COBOL OGs are retired/ing and the industry has been training young people telling them "yeah, sorry, this is all we can pay you". Here in Europe, they'll take unemployed people from a different industry, put them on a training course, and bang! you've got a grateful new dev who doesn't know how much they are worth.
You just gotta keep spreading the message. I keep happily sharing my salary, especially with younger, less experienced devs, so we can all win better.

  • Me right now, discovering that our archives data have file sizes... sometimes in bytes, sometimes in kilobytes. I found some pattern this morning thinking I could know which was which, then the pattern collapsed at some date in the past.
    Joy.

  • Mine are doing it with Pokemon right now, but yeah, it's the same triggers and enthusiasm and I love seeing it and being there to share that with them (even if I never cared for Pokemon).

Their obsession changes with the years, but I have never really stopped them, whenever they want to share their enthusiasm, because my parents never gave me that and my god is it soul crushing to feel so misunderstood or downright ignored by the very first people who should at least fucking try!
Also given it's one of the big reason I never really communicate with my mum on anything, I'd rather not have the same situation happen to me when they grow up!

  • Well, what do you know, not boring at all after all! Although now I'm curious as to the role of the gas being pulsed at the metal. It sounds like without gas you can't cut metal? So... no laser cutting in a vacuum? Laser cutting really is just plasma cutting?

  • I remember playing Wolfenstein 3D with the mouse. There never was a question of what the mouse was for. It was for looking. The only question was what part of the keyboard to use. I started with arrows and Ctrl/Shift and used that for many years.

Can't remember what game made me switch but it was when the controls became more involved with reloading and healing and such requiring specific keys and being very commonly used during gameplay. Probably Half-Life? I know it wasn't id Software's games, at least. Mmh... I'd love to remember, now.

  • Well, if you play Steep, The Crew 2 or whatever their successors are called, i wouldn't call it terribly shocking. In fact, honestly, I think it would fit really well with the actual game. Instead of fake sponsors, well, you get real ones! My main problem with that of course, is the slippery slope of actual, real world sponsors getting pissy that players want to wear their own custom designs and not the official sponsor logos. And then they make sponsored gear with in-game bonuses and we have this capitalist nightmare... I'm guessing this is what we're gonna get, isn't it?

    sigh

On the plus side, I can always vote with my wallet.
