  • No, this is the device they have announced for early 2024, it hasn’t come out yet.

  • It would certainly be a big deal to have drastically more capacity on a battery or having one that keeps its capacity for longer or is more power efficient.

From device longevity to environment, I can imagine that better battery technology could have a huge impact. I sincerely hope that every company that can is researching it and making progress.

But I get your point that nothing has come of it yet.

  • I‘m sure they’d be happy to put it into their other devices as well, if possible. But you can’t deny that battery on VR/AR headsets is a much bigger issue compared to smartphones. On smartphones, you mostly make it through one day, on headsets you’re happy if it lasts two hours and the Vision Pro even has the battery dangling around on a cable.

  • I’ll take back the the "Russian" comment, then. I already mentioned the larger feature set of telegram and it’s totally fine to switch because of that.

I’m also aware of the optionally encrypted chats, but them not being the default, as well as being more cumbersome to use and without a notification preview means that basically no one uses it (at least in my experience).

As I understand it the feature set wasn’t the reason for switching so I’m curious in what areas telegram might be considered the better choice compared to Signal/Matrix or even WhatsApp. As I see it it’s missing e2e encryption and isn’t as wide spread as WhatsApp.

Telegram has also some big issues with misinformation and conspiracy stuff due to its "hidden communities" and social media aspect with broadcasting and gigantic groups. I personally know people that have been sucked into this and it makes me quite sad.

So I’d be working hard to convince people to switch (which I’ve actually done already with telegram when it first came out) with no real upside and mostly downsides.

  • Telegram has some nice features and I can understand that people want to go away from WhatsApp, but as you said it doesn’t even have end to end encryption and additionally belongs to some Russian. How’s that a beginning?

If you’re already switching, why not go to matrix or signal instead if they are, as you said yourself, most likely the better choice? If you’re switching because of the features, okay. But switching, because of privacy concerns or the company behind it makes absolutely no sense imo.

  • Nice, thanks for letting me know :)

  • Also whatever Karma system Lemmy had is being removed in the next Lemmy version haha

  • It looks like someone‘s pissed at you and following you around to downvote everything you do ^

  • Maybe thats a cdn update issue and it takes some time to be visible from everywhere, it’s definitely there for me. Glad you figured it out.

  • It’s still this url, the version should say 1.1.1. Not sure what you are trying to do. If you have an image that you want to upload, you can use the shortcut via the sharesheet to copy the image url (this should work from photos or also from a website or anywhere else where you can share an image). If the image is already uploaded somewhere you can probably just copy the image url from there.

  • I think it’s still working correctly, only the copied message was showing weird stuff. I uploaded a new version of the shortcut, could you try it and see if that fixes it?

  • I‘m pretty sure voyager was using Lemmy (not sure if your home instance or the community instance) to upload images, but most Lemmy servers deactivated the upload due to csam. And afaict that’s still the case for mine.

I’ve been uploading my images via Imgur and this iOS shortcut, you can just grab an image link from somewhere and paste it into the link field.

  • I‘m frankly not sure what I should think about that. I get the argument of chasing points being harmful, but I would imagine that it also drives interaction and gives some motivation to participate – and Lemmy definitely benefits from participation. I also like myself some reports and statistics.

  • I mean… people buying it are fools and we don’t know if anyone has actually done so. The person selling it might be an idiot, but is it foolish to ask for money? Doesn’t hurt, especially if you need it desperately.

  • That guy already had more than enough compensation with that hoodie and the office tour they gave him.

  • Afaict the TestFlight beta on iOS is currently the exact same version as the App Store version. Don’t know about Android.

  • Quoting the beginning of the article:

Let me introduce you to WordStar 4.0, a popular word processor from the early 80s. As old as it seems, George R.R. Martin used it to write “A Song of Ice and Fire”.

Why would someone use such an old piece of software to write over 5,000 pages? I love how he puts it:

It does everything I want a word processing program to do and it doesn't do anything else. I don't want any help. I hate some of these modern systems where you type up a lowercase letter and it becomes a capital. I don't want a capital, if I'd wanted a capital, I would have typed the capital. – George R. R. Martin
