  • I‘m missing that the most as well, hopefully that’s not too far off

  • I wish it was, but it isn’t currently

  • Okay that could be a how, but it’s not explaining what the issue would be with defederating once that happens, and not how the two services coordinate together, since they have such different concepts behind them.

But even if they could do it, it’s probably not gonna be worth the effort for what will be 0.5% of their own user base where they can get much more detailed information and control.

  • I don’t see how that’s related to them lying about user numbers, which I really don’t think they are doing.

We’ll see where threads will be in a few months, I’m sure not everyone will stay active there.

  • Open the website, tap share and then scroll down, it should show up there somewhere: image

  • Technically Lemmy and Mastodon might be related, but they’re not the same. Mastodon has already been maturing for a while and tweetbot had already been ported for app.net, so I’m sure they had it much easier this time around. Also tweetbot was basically their only source of income and then entire communities started moving over.

Apollo isn’t the only income source for Christian and at least in his eyes Lemmy isn’t yet at a place where it’s certain it will take off.

  • Pretty sure they’re not. I mean those are instagram accounts, but only those who enabled threads. It’s also at 93 million now.

Why is it so hard to believe that people download the app and try it out? It’s easy to do, users don’t have to create a new account, the app is number one on the App Store, they’re probably advertising it in instagram, and it’s still just 20% of the instagram userbase.

Decentralization is nice, but most people don’t care about it and it’s too complicated or annoying to sign up there. Threads is dead simple and people want a Twitter replacement. It’s also "just" a fifth of the Twitter userbase.

  • I think just https://wefwef.app (or better vger.app). But I didn’t make that shortcut and I kinda dislike having to install a profile for it. I tried it though and it worked for me.

I think the one I made is much cleaner as it’s just temporarily replacing the image URLs on the website before adding it.

  • Have you listened to the snipped? He specifically said that it would’ve been a ton of work and he’s not sure if it would’ve been worth it since it’s not clear if Lemmy is going anywhere

  • I hate meta just like the next person, but I‘m not sure how that’s supposed to boost accounts, since you’re literally just seeing these once you already have the account.

They are of course using their advantage in providing you your existing following list /followers. And they’re definitely happy to push it, but this post is implying something that strikes me as plain wrong.

  • They’re not creating a shadow account, you’re literally logging in with your instagram account.

What this post is implying, is that the user numbers are just existing instagram accounts, which doesn’t make sense because in that case they’d have 2 billion users within the first second.

You can follow/request to follow before the user has actually "created" the account, so they’re lying about which users have done that already, not about how many users they actually have.

    Come at me downvotes

  • If you’re on iOS and want to use this as an icon here‘s how.

  • If you’re on iOS and want to use this as an icon for a web app here‘s how.

  • If you’re on iOS and want to use this as an icon here‘s how.

(I think I’ll just keep posting this under every icon proposal from now on)

  • As you mentioned, how would federating with Threads even look like? The format is completely different, would it just be a "threads" community and every post there ends up in one community?

Apart from that, I get the general skepticism against meta, but what’s the danger in federating with them and then defederating as soon as any of the rules are actually broken? Just curious, don’t hate me

  • Also you have fewer opportunities to embarrass yourself with your suddenly missing fork-knife-food-interaction skills

  • I was a bit confused that that wasn’t already on the list. It’s the only reason why I have to keep going back to the website

  • There’s a bunch of little things like that, freezing here and there, the back swipe not working as well, tap on status bar, the in-App browser popping up instead of sliding, haptics missing, …

We’ll see how all the apps develop. I currently still prefer wefwef due to it working and looking the best (even with these small annoyances).

  • Sad to see how deep Musk has fallen. He‘s becoming more and more like Trump and hopefully sooner rather than later he’ll be completely irrelevant
