  • If I were to guess, non-android smart tv. There are very few options if any for these TVs. Since I got my TCL google tv I just put smarttube on it and that was it, no more ads and cast still works. But can't do that with parents' old chromecast or lg TVs

  • That's a shame. Problems like this is why lemmy won't go very far imo. Expecting a random person on the internet to go through the signup process which involves applying for an account on some instances is wishful thinking, them understanding what federation is and how it works is very optimistic, but then braking the federation with no warning and no action plan for fixing it is just shooting yourself in the foot.

  • Home assistant, tasmota, zigbee, valetudo and some bluetooth stuff work very well for a secure IoT setup. Only smart stuff connected to the internet is the TV. Haven't found anything to replace it's functionality, maybe some HTPC would work, but that's a project for another time.

  • So, everyone using a smartphone in 2024? If it's not China, it's the US or other gov, or ISP or VPN provider and the list keeps growing. They are all tracking you and it's foolish to believe otherwise. And even if you have a dumb phone that can also track you, on top of all the cameras in public areas or sattelite imagery.

  • Sounds like your company never had major issues with cyber attacks. Allowing unmanaged hosts into the environment is a cybersec nightmare, even if just through web apps. Also citrix is a worse experience than any underpowered work laptop.

  • Why would you get excited for BYOD? If you're bringing your own device you just use personal resources for work purposes, also you give your employer the oportunity of always being available on top of whatever insight they gather from your device using their software. When I had a work phone it would go on airplane mode at the end of my working hours.

If you are the company, sure you save money, but good luck securing any sensitive data on your employee devices, also there is only so many compliance policies that you can enforce on a device you don't own.

  • And this is why I said changing the missconception that nuclear can't be safe is hard. There are types of reactors safe by design.

Sure, no tech is foolproof, but have a look at how the molten salt reactor works. That kind of reactor doesn't have a meltdown issue. That doesn't mean things can't still go wrong, but we have to do something about the emissions from these container ships burning the most crap of the fossil fuels... If we look at how many people die of deseases caused by air polution, the tiny risk of a nuclear accident looks a lot more acceptable. And that's before we even consider how bad the climate changed in recent years.

We have to start educating ourselves and others on nuclear, because although renewables are cheaper, the energy storage for when there is no wind/sun is still very expensive and pretty crap tech(you have a phone, you know how the battery dies in 2-3 years). Also lithium won't last forever so until we figure out something to replace it, nuclear can cover the gaps with considerably less emissions than dino juices and ancient biomass.

  • Nuclear powered ships are not a new thing. They've been around for decades. They would benefit our emission a lot. Let's hope that they will be allowed in the ports around the world, this has been the greatest limitation so far. Convincing general population that nuclear can be safe is no easy feat.

  • There are phones that output analog audio over type C so you can have a type c to jack adapter with no dac inside, just wires. That is possible through Audio Adapter Accessory Alternate Mode.

My huawei tablet works with such an adapter, but when I try it with the samsung s10e which has a jack, it gives an error and doesn't work.

Type C alternate modes are cool, too bad they are not advertised, they should be clearly labled and easily distinguishable. Type C has so many features yet it's so hard to know what's available without actually having the devices and connecting them. It's both a blessing and a curse.

  • As long as EVs are based on the same crappy battery tech that we have in the phones that we know dies in like 3-4 years in good conditions they won't help us much.

Until we can power them with something better like hydrogen for example, we should start cutting emissions elsewhere, like private jets, or heating up/cooling down useless inefficient glass office buldings that people don't need anyway since they can work from home and save the cost, time and emissions from the commute as well.

Forcing EVs right now with the crappy batteries will only get us faster to li-ion scarcity. Not to mention the battery fires that can't be extinguished, reduced capacity in cold climates and slow recharge time.

  • What about the toxic fumes from burning fossil fuels literally killing ppl every year? What about the damaged ecosystems from hydro power dams? What about the unrecyclable wind turbine blades that end up in landfill? What about them shiny solar panels in the winter when you have a few hours of sun mostly hidden behind clouds?

Every energy production has its drawbacks otherwise we wouldn't have so many issues with global warming. The thing is, when looking at how much damage the fossil fuels did compared to 3 nuclear accidents, I think there is a clear winner.
