  • "The thinktank urged the government to take action to encourage saving"

Do they think people don't have savings by choice?

They might find a lot more people "willing" to save if their incomes were a bit higher compared to the cost of basic living.

  • The following people could easily be confused with place names:

    • Greg Lake
    • Grace Park
    • Damon Hill
    • Jeff Bridges
    • Grant Orchard
    • Denny Lane
    • Anson Mount
    • Jimmy Cliff
    • Graeme Garden

So if you're struggling to name your Cities Skylines districts, this may or not help, depending on your sense of humour.

    I hope this helps.

  • You're totally right for brand new kit, but for older kit I've found that's swung hard in the opposite direction.

For example, I was trying to help someone at the weekend setting up some old audio kit, a few printers and a slide scanner on their mac system, and it was a nightmare, and half of it's still not working.

You're constantly getting stuck with "this device only works with these 3 versions of this software and those versions of software only works on these versions of MacOS and these versions of MacOS only work with these models of Mac.

When I tested the devices on my laptop (Linux Mint), everything was detected instantly and worked with several different pieces of software (at least as far as you can test in a few minutes).

As said, I get that's not the case with newest kit, or kit that requires special proprietary software, but for a lot of older equipment, I absolutely can't fault it.

  • It's a good and interesting article, though I was under the impression that another contributor was all the empty city centre properties being "sat on" by large property holding companies, or as "theoretical money" by pension companies.

I'm not confident I 100% understand it, but the gist is:

In the skint run-down "lovable shithole" I live in, a fair chunk of the city centre has been boarded up for years and years. If you want to rent one of those units? Still £20k a year. It never dropped from its prime.

Why don't they lower the rent, rather than let it sit derelict?

If they rent it out for £5-10k a year, it's only worth £5-10k a year.

If it used to be rented for £20k a year, and nobody rents it, because nobody wants to pay that much, it's still "worth" £20k a year in someone's asset portfolio, and you can borrow money based on the theoretical value of the property, or sell it on to another developer/holding company based on its theoretical value.

So in theory, there's plenty of smaller shops/businesses that would use these units if the rents were lowered to something affordable, but none of the owners want to lower the rents, as it "devalues the asset".

Therefore we have a city full of small businesses desperate for premises, and a city full of semi-derelict boarded-up shop units.

  • Do you know any of the following:

    • what's the WiFi card in it?
    • what's the laptop?
    • what kernel version are you using?

For an easy GUI way to find these, you can go to the

    bottom-left menu > administration > system reports

Then go to the System Information tab.

You should have the kernel i.e. 6.3.0-39-generic at the top

Scroll down, and under network you should have something like Device-1 Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 - that'll be the WiFi card.

In case you didn't know, the Kernel contains drivers for things like WiFi and other devices.

An older kernel tends to be more stable (the bugs have been fixed) - but it cannot contain the drivers for devices that didn't exist at the time.

By default, Mint is likely using the kernel 5.15, from 2022. If your WiFi device is newer than 2022, it won't work yet. However, you can install a newer kernel (mine, above is 6.3.0). I had to do this to get the WiFi working on my Thinkpad p14s. This is quite simple and safe to do, and completely reversible if there are problems.

There's a chance if the WiFi card is particularly new or obscure, that it won't work at all currently. We're waiting on the company, or more likely a talented volunteer, to write the drivers.

In this case, you may need to buy a USB WiFi adapter, for example TP-Link USB Wifi. I had to do this with my Dad's laptop recently. Within the next year, he probably won't need it anymore, as the drivers for the internal one will likely exist.

  • I've used an e-cig of sorts for about 10 years - but I think fully disposable ones are stupid. Why are we throwing a working rechargeable battery, circuit board etc in the bin repeatedly?

From previous sealed battery units, or disposable coil units or combined tank/coil ends, I got so stressed out by the wastage (even after finding ways to clean, dry burn, refill and extend the life of them) that I got a rebuildable atomiser, and a unit with replaceable batteries.

My waste is now 5cm of very thin wire, and 3cm x 0.5cm of cotton wadding, ~10 times a year.

Due to bit of shoddy manifacturing, and cheap corner-cutting, there's also a likely point of failure on the USB port or power button, so assume additional waste of 1 circuit board and plastic box per year.

But, assuming someone uses 1 disposable vape a week? A day? That's 52 to 365 perfectly functioning rechargeable batteries being thrown in the bin each year, along with the same amount of circuit boards and plastic tubes.

  • To be fair the original knowledge was flawed.

Temptation is more of a Ooh-e-Ooh Ooh-e-Ooh Ooh-oo-oo-ee-ooh Ooh-oo-oo-ee-ooh, so I can see the confusion.

However, unless they've changed it in the last few years, I would have said Doctor Who is more

    Wee-Ooooh Whoo-Ooh-Oo-Oo (Daddle-a-da daddle-a-da daddle-a-da daddle-a-daddle) Whoo-oo-oo wh-oo wh-oo-oo. (Daddle-a-da daddle-a-da daddle-a-da daddle-a-daddle)

[Edit] Apologies, I've just realised you were replying to a reply of a reply, I didn't follow the little lines properly and got confused.
