  • Referring to femme-presenting people as "traps" is transphobic, originating in the idea that trans women are somehow disingenuous by showing their true selves to the world. Because horny cis straight guys might get horny about trans women (and that's bad for some reason).

  • Canadian special forces have been involved in the U.S.-led Flintlock training exercises in Africa for more than 10 years. During that time, they have trained troops from Niger during five different Flintlock exercises.

From the article. As to why Canadian special forces were involved in training African troops, I couldn't say.

  • I used to use Liftoff, I changed to Jerboa when my instance upgraded to 0.19.

It has dark mode, landscape, and support for multiple accounts. It's open-source if that's the kind of thing that tickles your fancy. Also, it's by the same dev as lemmy itself so compatibility shouldn't be an issue going forward.

  • Hasn't been updated since the summer, and doesn't work with versions 0.19 of lemmy or newer. I heard the dev had twins, which yeah fair enough take all the time off your open source lemmy app.

  • "Bloody-minded nationalism" is a bit of an overstatement, don't you think? Unless you're going back over 50 years ago, Québec nationalism has been rather meek.

I have a lot of feelings about Québec's language laws and its nationalism (I'm French-Canadian from outside Québec, for context) but I find it interesting how Québec making the use of its language necessary for participation in society is seen as nationalistic, even racist, yet Canada making English necessary for participation in society is seen as perfectly acceptable. I bet a lot of the same people who whine about Québec's language laws would go berserk if they saw non-English signage dominate their community.

  • Say what you want about Québec's language laws; what's a nuisance to American business interests is most likely good for the people.

  • There's zspotify which is the only one I know of, but on the rare occasion I want to download an album I just use doubledouble.top

  • I can’t stand people voluntarily using gnome

How does this affect you in any way, though?? I get being frustrated at having to use it, that blows, but why do you care if others use it?

  • Unwritten - Natasha Bedingfield

It's a banger and works in any situation. Dance floor? Everyone's singing and bopping. Alone in your room depressed as fuck? You're cry-singing your heart out. Wedding? Lovely song about starting a new chapter together. Working out? It's a motivational masterpiece. It's so versatile and so good.

  • Uh, no need to apologize? I'm not offended at "Gnome being garbage". I don't feel any offense at all, to be honest.

I am slightly annoyed at the "too-bad-it's-Gnome" comment, which is why I pointed it out. It's fine to not like Gnome, heck, I don't like Gnome. I don't see why that should translate into having a shitty attitude towards people who do like it. I'm just glad people are using FOSS, whether it be some nerd dev on an obscure tiling WM perfectly customized to suit their needs, or some tech-illiterate noobie using Linux Mint and a GUI software manager.

  • I use FreeTube on desktop to follow my favourite YouTube channels, and I've found the related videos section to be quite good in occasionally suggesting videos from channels I'm unfamiliar with. I also have a Nebula subscription, so I find content creators from there as well.

I do admit that sometimes I'll login to my old YouTube account and check what their algorithm is suggesting. I just copy/paste the URLs into FreeTube.

  • Disregarding the DE-shaming (which, lol who cares? let people use what they like) how do you even figure OP uses Gnome? I can't make out anything on their screen from the picture apart from the neofetch.

  • I've tried AnySoftKeyboard and that was not my experience. It worked fine if I only wrote out sentences that were fully in one language or the other, but as soon as I tried to switch mid-sentence it became completely borked.

I've been using the OpenBoard fork that was recommended in this thread for the past few days, and it's been lovely.

  • After looking around the settings a bit more, I noticed the "keyboard height scale" and "bottom padding scale" options, I set both of these to 80% and it's perfect!

Thanks again the the great suggestion 😊

  • Stop, we're just on the verge of electing our Trump-like politician. I've had to cut out US political news because the prophecies are too foreboding.

  • We usually just import American issues but with a 2 to 5 year delay.

  • I was honestly hoping for a reply like this when I commented. I'll give it a try, thanks! 😊 I'd love to ditch SwiftKey.

Edit: So far, it's the by far best FOSS option I've tried. There's even a couple of things it does much better than SwiftKey IMO (although I do wish there were an option to make the keyboard a bit smaller, it feels massive!) I'll stick with it for 2-3 weeks to try and train its auto-correct to my liking.

  • It runs Android TV, so you just need to get the APK onto your TV. You can download a file manager from the Play store (I use X-Plore) and use that to install the APK from via USB. Alternatively, you could download a web browser from the Play store (I use TV Bro) and download the APK directly on the TV.

  • The personal wiki idea is so insanely nerdy and obsessive and might just be the thing that pushes me to start self-hosting stuff. That's such an amazing idea.

  • Can we just stop? I think we've gone too far. I say we take like a week or two, where no one's allowed to sell or buy anything. Just taking a breather, and realizing how exhausting all of this is.
