  • I remember there being a joke about a sequel where Jack is found frozen, revived, then has to make sense of all the merchandising and romanticism around what to him was a very real and recent tragedy.

  • This looks like a massive own goal for the Alabama GOP. The relevant state constitution amendment was pushed through in response to covid 19 and they way many states improved voting access during the worst of the pandemic.

    It was supposed to make it harder to expand voting access but now (briefly) did the opposite. Not that it matters much on a deep red state.

  • My indirect experience with python is that it is slow as hell. Anytime I install an app that includes python it lags 15-30 minutes on that step. Anytime I'm asked to install something with conda it takes 30 minutes to an hour.

    I'm sure that is just due to environmental and implementation issues, but the Java fans say the same thing...

  • Yeah. They treat profit like a necessary business expense or a cost, and balance their budgets around it. Which perverts a fundamental of economics.

    I'm starting to think the stock market is just a really awful bank that is sometimes also a ponzi scheme.

    I'm not one of those people who complains about religious tax exemptions and the like. But if you have an "investment arm" then you are not a church, you are some sort of weird, cultist bank.

  • They've overhyped the hell out of it and slapped those letters on everything including a lot of half baked ideas. Of course people are tired of it and beginning to associate ai with bad marketing.

    This whole situation really does feel dotcommish. I suspect we will soon see an ai crash, then a decade or so later it will be ubiquitous but far less hyped.
