  • I think there's some value to a more narrowly defined topic based community centered around Linux to draw from in order meet the desires of the greater Beehaw Community.

People searching for "Linux" communities will likely not search for "Free and Open Source Software" and "FOSS" and "FLOSS" and "Free Software" and "Libre Software" and "Operating Systems" to in attempt to find relevant communities. Their attention is likely exhausted after their original search for "Linux". There's a clear interest in Linux as a topic for discussion with evidence presented in the form of multiple requests I've seen for a Linux Beehaw community.

The Free and Open Source Software and the Operating Systems Beehaw Communities seem like they are both too general and too specific at the same time. They compete with Technology and Programming communities for mindshare while not capturing the attention of those who desire to discuss Linux specifically. People are not being primed by the community names alone in the moment of interest around discussing Linux. Theses are the appropriate places for discussion of Linux on Beehaw but it's not immediately clear to those who would be interested.

Considering the role of nudges and small obstacles have on people, I hope adding a Linux community is considered by the Beehaw admins to continue to foster a thriving community.

  • "the procedure called burst wave lithotripsy uses an ultrasound wand and soundwaves to break apart the kidney stone.

Ultrasonic propulsion is then used to move the stone fragments out, potentially giving patients relief in 10 minutes or less.

This technology is also making it possible for astronauts to travel to Mars, since astronauts are at a greater risk for developing kidney stones during space travel.

It's so important to NASA, the space agency has been funding the research for the last 10 years.

"They could potentially use this technology while there, to help break a stone or push it to where they could help stay on their mission and not have to come back to land," said Harper."

  • Fintech can take on the high stress culture of the financial world where you're expected to just accept that money will make up for the ever increasing pressure to work more and harder to "win". There's a reason Wall Street is infamously known for cocaine

All that to say, I think your approach is better than what's being suggested by others here.

  • I know of someone making a replacement for the core of Lemmy with a focus on good architecture for administration and moderation tools. It'll have a compatible API so the apps and front-end doesn't have to change to use the new core. He says he's more that 1/3 through to something that can be released in alpha. I'll keep you and the Beehaw crowd in the loop for when the alpha release is ready.

  • The point is that magnets pose a greater threat than most things that are commonly swallowed. This article identifies that risk and tries to spread the word to treat magnets as more dangerous than coins or other random small objects which may be choking hazards.

  • I hope this changes the economics that drive these scams.

  • I didn't particularly like Firefish.

  • Any one of those can be made invite only. And Discord can have public invite links that don't expire (it seems that many servers do).

  • Good point. The single account for multiple "servers" contributes to that as well.

  • Your opinion here is valid, but I'm really at a loss for how you formed it. It's no big deal. Everyone has different tastes. I was just hoping to learn a bit. Have a great day.

  • I wouldn't call that an integration with Matrix anymore than I would call a button that said "Send 'user' an Email" that had a mailto link attribute an integration with email.

  • Isn't that just how matrix works? If I post my Matrix ID on a website, clicking it will take you to Matrix. If you don't have a Matrix account, you will be prompted to pick a server and a client and create an account. The Lemmy default UI just hides the link behind a button labeled "Send Secure Message"
