  • So all you gotta steal is $300 for a plane ticket. That should be relatively easy, right?

  • Better attitude than John Carmacks "Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important."

  • Does the bird decimation happens in the wilderness too? When birds have trees enough to hide? The cats we've had very rarely brought birds home. I think our livingroom windows have taken out more birds than our cats ever did. They brought back mouse often instead.

So my guess is that it is also the lack of cat-safe hiding spots that get small birds killed in cities. Not all birds are able to stay on roofs when its a bit of wind. And cats can easier sneak up buildings than out on a thin tree branch.

  • Not pets, but I greet the wild birds around here with "Gmorning, boids" or something. The reason is simple: I hate being a bother, even to animals, and the birds are less likely to be scared and fly away if I speak to them.

Also when I lived with cats, no cat who was let out would ever forget to say "mrr", which I interpreted as a "thank you". Of course I responded to them like I would a human.

  • But then the DRM on the ink cartridge will block us from using it! /s

Damn how far we've fallen, that companies do actually try this, and still doesnt go bottom up from the bad reputation.

  • A lot of communities went to Discord for some reason. I don't get it, its not the same as reddit at all.

  • Never heard anyone use megameters either. They either stay on kilometer, or switch to miles. And miles mean different things from one place to the next.

  • I also just find uBlock Origin supports more advanced features.

Googling it and according to one answer the only difference between uBlock Origin and AdGuard browser extensions is that uBlock has a feature where they can hide stuff instead of completely blocking it. Two comments said AdGuard was the more techy one, and most users would prefer uBlock Origin because of that. A bunch of comments are people who obviously havent tried them both. Some are confusion about the difference between AdGuard desktop program and AdGuard browser extensions.

Maybe better if I just test it for myself.

some of the functionality being locked behind a paywall

The entire desktop app, yes. That does DNS blocking. Not the browser extensions, no blocked features there.

  • switched back to the free browser extensions for a reason I dont remember anymore.

I remember now. It caused havok with a lot of UWP apps. So I went to browser-extensions only.

  • If you use say, Firefox for Android, then you don’t have much choice besides uBlock,

Or AdGuard. I run the AdGuard browser extension on my Firefox for Android. It claims to also have one for iOS Safari. It has a paid desktop app, and that one add DNS blocks. I tried it once and paid for a license, but then I switched back to the free browser extensions for a reason I dont remember anymore.

  • To all you uBlock Origin fans: Any reason why nobody ever recommend AdGuard over uBlock Origin? Anything questionable about it? Or is it just that uBlock is well-known?

  • I am curious and exited to hear what tricks they have used.

Theres nothing in the engine reqiring to fill every cell between two cells. Might as well be empty space, or cells with random generated terrain.

Also how are they doing the ship interior cell? Loading a cell without removing the old? Why aren't they using the same thing for interior windows in houses then?

  • No, just that there are no invisible walls. After 7 hours of flying, she reached a paper-cutout of the planet.

Yes! Thats a nerd. We nerds used to joke that those soccer fans who knew every team and player, and their strengths, those were still nerds even if they wouldnt admit it.

  • It wasnt when and where I grew up. The stereotype was still the "Revenge of the nerds" or "Steve Urkel". But I kinda took the label as a shield when people used it on me and I learned what it meant. Why should I be ashamed of enjoying digging into computers and programming? Why would enjoying books or non-mainstream comics be such a negative thing? Why would playing more advanced video games be sad? Or finding math fun? And why was I the only one who would admit to enjoying it at school? I know a few people had some shared interest, but they never spoke of it at school. Also why yell out loudly that whatever I was lost in was utterly boring to them? And when reaching the next level of education and meeting people LIKE ME, the nerd label hardened. They were nerds, I was nerd. I learned about roleplaying games, MTG, even more advanced video games, that stuff that seemed was the domain of most nerds.

The nerd label meant someone who had multiple interests into stuff that average people called "boring". Finding people who called themselves nerds meant that they very likely shared some interests with me, or could teach me something new I would find interesting. So I am still a bit sore that people who bullied me for being a nerd later proudly declare themselves nerds for ONLY playing such a simple game as World of Warcraft when that was popular. It is about using a word for what seemed like it had its own meaning back then, who now have become a synonym for "gamer".

/u/pjhenry1216@kbin.social I dont consider that gate-keeping. I would welcome all and any to enjoy the things nerds enjoy. I just want to have a name for the subculture I joined and found belonging in. Words like goth have meaning still, and it isnt gatekeeping to assume it means people who enjoys dressing in all-black.

  • Is "nerd" such a negative thing anymore? Seems like its been watered down to mean "I play at least one video game".

I use the term "classic nerd" for what was once "nerd" because I havent found another word that covers it.

  • Give it to a bunch of bored monks. If they could make something as useless as two chained sticks into a cool weapon..

  • I've given up. The war for privacy is lost. The only thing we can fight for now is having the same open insight into companies that they have on us. And try to push the companies out of governments.

(please don't listen to my defeatism, keep fighting as long as you got the energy)

  • Public transport, probably. We're heading the same way here in Norway too. Everyone needs phones and internet to access society.
