  • That being said, I am less skeptical of the growth in users in India, but not for the reason the author listed. I think it's more likely that it is growing in popularity due to its cost (ie, free), as well as the fact that many distros are more lightweight than Windows, which especially benefits older or cheaper hardware.

Most Windows in India is pirated. Microsoft doesn't care unless you're a big company. The second point is true. Another reason is that schools shifted to Ubuntu 10-15 years ago, and government departments are now shifting to Linux.

  • Maybe they read about Canada genociding Indians. (/s)

But yes, our current government is behaving in a very short-sighted way, pissing off other countries for immediate benefits (trade deals, more visas, etc.). It isn't just Canada.

  • The rent I receive doesn't even cover the cost of the apartment. I'm losing money on it every year. So I'm subsidising someone's housing.

The third statement might be true, but it does not follow from the first two. Are the two houses of equal size? Are they in equally desirable locations? Also, is the market price of the house you are renting out increasing? You need to account for these.

  • First of all, school or uni?

As many others have said, don't give a take home exam during a break, however 'normal' it is considered in your community.

Second, have clear guidelines on what is allowed and what is cheating. We never had take-home exams in school, and in uni every take-home exam was open book, open internet and open discussion. In the absence of any statement to the contrary, your students would also be justified in assuming so.

Asking someone to repeat the answer is fine, but it doesn't really prove anything - they might have simply forgotten all the formulae over their break.

The best option at this point would be to cancel that question and conduct future tests during class hours, under your supervision.

  • Our history textbooks were actually good in this regard. In addition to a broad look at world history, they had focus chapters on things like the history of cricket and the Vietnam war.

Now if only they could stop the Indian history section from being the history of powerful men in and around Delhi …
