  • Do you know of any good comprehensive followup to this? A quick search shows me lots of outdated info and inconclusive articles. Do you know if they conclusively found anything or if there is a good writeup on the whole situation?

  • Why would he want people to think hes a parody account? He didnt want to just say whatever, he wanted to influence public opinion in his favor. He used the alt account to try to boost his public reputation/give the appearance of organic support for his positions and opinions.

  • Nobody ever wins arguments, thats why ive mostly stopped having them. Sometimes, with a lot of long and patient DISCUSSIONS you can maybe bring someone around to seeing your point of view, but in an argument all sides just end up thinking the other is an asshole.

  • No, they presumed Harris would be reasonable and make concessions to the will of the people. The fact that she didnt isnt on the people, its on her. She did nothing but try to appeal to the center-right which clearly didnt work, but she didn't learn andbthe Democratic party still isnt gonna learn. Nobody assumes Trump is better either, they just refused to cave to the Democrat's clear manipulation of the situation and disdain for the average person.

  • People like you are the reason the democratic party refuses to learn anything from this loss, and will continue to do whatever their donors want at the cost of the will of the voters. Because they know that no matter how bad they get, they'll alwats have scared little followers waiting around to vote for them unconditionally and shame anyone who tries to use what little leverage they had to make a stand. If enough people had spoken up in the year before the election then maybe you could have saved Palestine. And stopped Trump from getting in. But you got played and still dont realize, and the Democratic leadership doesn't even care that they lost because they know Trump will make them look good again, and they get to launder another Billion dollars in 4 years time.

  • I think maybe you're misunderstanding the whole ancient greek thing. You keep saying that since they had only one word for blue and green that they 'saw them the same', but that doesnt at all mean that their brains processed the input of blue and green colors identically. I mean just look at how we define colours. What exact shade is red? Theres hundreds or thousands of different colours that would all fit into most people's definition of 'red' and that likely differs from person to person. Just because the greeks referred to different shades of blue and green with the same overarching word, doesnt mean they couldnt distinguish the difference at all. Calling multiple shades of a color a single namr doesn't prevent us from seeing the differences between those shades which seems to be what you're inferring.

  • In VLC theres also a setting to increase/decrease the subtitle delay. Theres a set of hotkeys to move it up/down by 50ms at a time, or you can go into the settings and enter a custom valur. Sometimes this doesnt work for a whole movie as the subtitles will just keep getting more and more out of sync, but if theyre just behind or ahead by a little bit consistently, then its a huge sanity saver.

  • No its true actually. Vladimir (the impaler) Putin and President Xi got together and had a secret meeting all about how Wikipedia is the greatest threat to their total dictatorship of Earth, because its the only thing keeping the American citizens so free and open minded and a place where people can go to learn about forbidden topics like Tank Girl and Winnie the Pooh. Putin got mad because he read the article about Grizzly bears and it said he'd probably die if he tried to wrestle one, so he spun up his special government botnet from his elite hacker force and activated his army of Tankie sleeper agents on Lemmy to make an attack on the Freedom of Information Act (thats a special law that Biden made to try to protect wikipedia and keep free speech safe).

this is a joke about foreign influence on Lemmy, not about Wikipedia itself. I like wikipedia

  • I have a feeling OP's "friends" wont necessarily even be aware hes connected the device to their network. It sounds to me like he wants something he can hide places to take advantage of unsecured or public networks without having to sit there with his laptop doing whatever shady shit he has planned.

  • In my experience its very common, just to give a counterpoint. "Bring in the horns" to denote a trumpet heavy section, or just referring to the brass section as "the horn section". 8dk might just be reguonal i guess but its colloquial.

  • The conspiracist in me wonders if this is intentional as the result of a deal with other publishers. Maybe its just that 'the devs didnt get around to it' but honestly with how simple it should be to release things on GOG i more wonder if it isnt suppression.

  • Yeah that's fair, and im not defending the practice, it just made me think of some games that Ive seen that have multiple executables, usually with an inbuilt launcher that i have to bypass. Or when games used to come with a dx11 and dx12 executable. Personally i find that in itself super sloppy and annoying as well, but it makes a kind of lazy sense to just apply it to all the game files, in that its just one less thing to have to change if you make an alteration to the name of the executable file or add a new executable for whatever reason. Just one less possible failure point. But yeah I can see how its definitely not best practice.

  • No im saying theres no such thing as a "GOG" version afaik. Its just the game files. What features differentiate a 'GOG' version from the same game acquired anywhere else? Their whole business model is offering games without any DRM or storefront added features, you dont even need to use their launcher, you can just download the game files directly. Whereas 'Steam' versions have all sorts of code added to be compatible with Steam.

  • I mean i assume thats just easier to deal with updates where a game has multiple exe files that may or may not change names. Assuming everything in the directory is assumed to be safe, is there any downside to applying it to everything, aside from opening up the possibility of a user accidentally trying to execute like a texture file or something which I assume just wouldnt work? I actually don't know and im curious.
