  • I use cheap Chinese knockoff toner in my Brother laser

  • I treat my Brother laser like a rented uhaul truck and it just keeps going.

  • So one thing that's interesting about the fediverse is you totally could have a single account and be federated with both, you just have to start your own instance.

I'm thinking what a "federation vending machine" might look like, where you could quickly start your own instance that's just productized and federated to your specifications. It's not something someone could do for free, but if people were willing to pay for the service it might work. Kinda like WordPress back in the day.

  • My method: I create an ISO filesystem in a file. Mount it, and copy my files I want to archive into it. I then unmount it and use gpg to encrypt the file with a passcode. Store one copy on a flash drive, another in another location, and a copy on S3.

I keep saved MFA tokens, password databases, copies of all my important documents, etc in the filesystem.

I don't really care about the potential for someone to brute force it. With a decent pass code it's impossible.

  • Xitter

    Pronounced "shitter", right?

  • If a business is failing it should be allowed to fail, full stop. Economics is Darwinian.

  • I mean... lawyers are pretty terrible. Case in point: most of Congress are lawyers.

  • 401Ks are just investment accounts. They have exactly as much risk as you expose yourself to. Balance your portfolio, use index funds intelligently, don't put all your eggs in one basket, and you'll be fine.

  • We have them, they're called elections. I don't like most people in Congress, but it's not up to me to decide who the people of Kentucky or California want to represent them. I have the right to weigh in on exactly 3 members of the legislature: 1 Congressional representative and 2 US Senators.

  • Related, yes, but if I leave my job I don't lose my 401K. I like my employer matching funds in it.

  • If a crash of that magnitude happens it's not like social security would fare any better. At that point you're talking about full scale economic disaster that affects the entire world.

  • I might agree with you if I had the option of opting out of Social Security. It's an absolute disaster and it'll never be fixed. You can say it should be, but if we're debating impractical solutions we may as well just include "everyone lives forever and always has everything they ever need".

  • And why would anyone care about Albert Einstein's view on Lenin? An obvious fallacious appeal to authority, and not even a very smart one.

That's if this is even true.

  • People that see Mao and Lenin and somehow think authoritarian dictatorships are democratic utopias.

  • You and me both, I much prefer the 401K model.

  • That loan saved the pensions of those people working at Yellow, if you maybe want to take that into account while you're fitting people for black hats.

  • He should be stripped of his fancy suit

Ok not to be too facetious but he has really bad suits.

  • If you've never tried it, take a can of sweetened condensed milk and simmer it (don't boil!). It'll take several hours simmering, but when you open the can you'll end up with something very similar to dulce de leche inside.

  • One of our chief industries is entertainment. Everyone knows it.
